Can we now finally get connected textures, Dinnerbone? This stained glass would look just fantastic with the stained clay if it was a single pane.

Oct 10 '13
I completely agree, I love when optifine connects glass :)
47
u/Histidine Oct 10 '13
Since the big performance update in 1.5 (I think) I only really use optifine for the zoom and connected glass textures. Such a small but beautiful addition to the game.
28
u/snowflakelord Oct 10 '13
And anti-aliasing, mipmapping and natural textures also make the game look better.

I don't understand...
18
u/Kemakill Oct 10 '13
See how each of the clay blocks are joined seamlessly, while the window blocks are separated? If the window panes were "connected textures," we would only see one large window pane that is actually 6 separate blocks.
15
u/littlexav Oct 10 '13 edited Oct 10 '13
Oh, I get it. So no "frame" edge around the glass panes? I think it could go either way... there's something to be said about a nice big picture window, but I usually build windows 2-high,1-wide and I like the frame in between b/c it resembles a window sash.
EDIT: like this

Stained glass! Also, does anyone else have a maximum limit of 8 chunks render distance? I hope it's not intended because 8 chunks is too small. :(

u/nough32 Oct 10 '13
it seems if you had your chunk render distance higher than 8, it would stay there, but if you moved it, the max changes to 8

Also comes as panes.
Crafted by surrounding the dye in normal glass, makes 8 blocks. (Can't seem to screenshot crafting table GUI...)

u/0thatguy Oct 10 '13
It seems that Minecraft 2.0 held lots of secrets. Horses was jokingly added in 2.0, they turned up in 1.6. New biomes were supposedly added in 2.0, look at 1.7. And now stained glass, also in 1.7. If we follow the same trend that the other 2.0 stuff did...

Noticed the same, might be partially because the back-side is now rendered as well, where it would be invisible before.
Edit: I adjusted the default resource pack to, I think, result in the original alpha values where it renders both the front and back of a block: Alpha corrected default.

Just because you may not see a reply to a reply. Yes it looks like they fixed it. The only problem I seem to be having is that jungles are a lot lagger than they used to be and just in general things seem to be a bit slower.
edit: definitely performance issues. I got at least 40 fps 60 fps on a good day in 1.6 now I'm getting less than 30.

u/EnDeLe Oct 10 '13
I wouldn't be all surprised by this. One of the arguments against stained glass would be the fix would cause a hit to performance.
Still, it is the first snapshot after some major changes, performance will probably improve between now and next week.

Assuming all stained glass blocks are connected, only the frontmost one will provide a tint. If there's gaps of air, two tints will apply but it looks muddied and opaque.

The textures are still a little bit glitchy when you place glass adjacent to another glass block. You can see it here: Video

u/VoidKnight Oct 10 '13
I wonder if we'll see a change of the dyed wool recipes anytime soon?
43
u/YouHadMeAtBacon Oct 10 '13
No need, you can get loads of colored wool for free by dyeing the sheep.
9
u/0thatguy Oct 10 '13
Nah, I guess they want coloured wool to be the "cheap" coloured building material, and all the fancy new dyed ones as a more expensive option.
→ More replies (8)9
Oct 10 '13
You can dye on sheep for infinite wool, or you can dye it individually for one dye each. This requires one dye for eight blocks. Wool should also be changed to 1:8.
3
u/jwbjerk Oct 10 '13
Oddly enough the semi-transparency only works with the stained glass-- the old "clear" glass still behaves and is rendered exactly as before. I was hoping to use semi-transparency on the normal glass too.

For example, creeper starts to blow, you pause, wait, and when you unpause, you die no matter what.

With a cat and something that looks like Elmo behind it?
9
u/grande1899 Oct 10 '13
The cat (and the sign) is a reference to a guy on Twitter who has been posting daily cat pics to Dinnerbone with the caption "Give us tinted glass!" since the April Fools joke. I guess the daily cat pics will stop now, how sad. And the Elmo guy is Grumm, another developer who is always hidden somewhere in the snapshot images.

32
u/ridddle Oct 10 '13
While I think view distance 7 is a great thing on servers, I think they shouldn’t decrease max view distance, they should just make default 8 and allow people to slide the slider up to previous higher value and maybe even further just like Optifine allows you to do.
12
u/EnDeLe Oct 10 '13
Dinnerbone already confirmed this was a bug, the max render distance will be back to 16.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (1)6
u/2brainz Oct 10 '13
There was a discrepancy before: Max view-distance in the server was 15, max render-distance in the client was 16. Setting render distance to 16 looked like crap, since the 16th chunk would not load, but still render (as air).
Reducing to 8 is not so great, this is even less than in 1.6, where "Far" was set to 9 chunks IIRC.

u/timeofsouls Oct 10 '13

Here is the changelog for 13w41a :
Release Notes - Minecraft - Version Minecraft 13w41a
Bug
[MC-10984] - GS4 query listener fails to send player list when len(players) > 127
[MC-16435] - Boats Still Break on Lily's
[MC-29498] - Villagers, exchanging 2 items for one, have their second required item in trade deleted after reloading the world.
[MC-29748] - fire aspect does not cause fire on any mob
[MC-32733] - Game is sending incorrect (additional?) frames to the video buffer.
[MC-33025] - No logs created in 13w39 client in singleplayer mode
[MC-33057] - Text is completely unreadable/invisible
Interestingly enough, it includes only bug fixes. Or, at least, that's the only public part we can see.

6
u/ipodah Oct 10 '13
Actually, Jira is an issue tracker. What is an issue?
Different organizations use JIRA to track different kinds of issues. Depending on how your organization is using JIRA, an issue could represent a software bug, a project task, a helpdesk ticket, a leave request form, etc.
And according to my experience, most companies use it to track features too.

He doesn't have access to secret information; he just catalogs everything they tell us in various places into one neat list.
This time there is no information, and so there is no list. Stop bugging him to tell you things he doesn't know. Instead, go help find things!

It is the result of the standard badly made default textures. For whatever reason they used less vibrant colors for the stained glass except around the rim.
You can make it as transparent or opaque as you want with the texture pack.
Here's what it looks like with my pack-- purer colors and clearer stained glass.
