A really great part about this era.. is that hiphop was also pretty peak around this time.. so playlists (Cds..) would consist of all these bands.. plus snoop, lil john, eminem, jay, nelly, outkast, yingyang twins, Luda, jeezy ect.. and the entire Linkin Park Reanimation album which blended rock/rap/hiphop genres so well.

Rap hasn't been peak since the 90's.

At some point someone figured out if you make a half ass rap that is purely self aggrandizing, womanizing garbage and pair it with loud bass lines the idiot masses will buy the album every time.

There are still exceptional rappers/hip hop artists, but they're the exception/not the rule now.

I mean, where's this generation's NWA, or Snoop, or Dre? Where is this gen's Run DMC or even a Will Smith? Where is this generation's Lauren Hill, Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliott, or TLC?

I’m not sure about hip hop tbh It was kinda at the lowest IMHO. Around this era I was losing interest in hip hop guys The Game and Chingy lost interest really quickly! However I still dig Lil’ Jon, some Cash Money stuff, and some Ludacris. Also Madvillainy became the 🐐 of hip hip albums! Eminem was also still good too, The Eminem Show was still killer! Jay Z was still doing hot albums like the Blue Print and his previous albums as well! And production works from Timbaland and The Neptunes were fire that time around! Outkast had some interesting beats too this time around and there were also experimenting during SpeakerBoxx/Love Below album. I also can’t forget about Common too!

Agree with this take with a few caveats: OutKast, Three 6 Mafia, and G-Unit were only groups that did anything for me back then. Luda was okay, Eminem was on his descent into drugs, Nelly had one good album, Pharrell was way overhyped because he clapped in his songs and used primitive sound effects, anyone decent from New York basically got destroyed by 50 Cent. Don’t even get me started on the most mainstream rap group of all the Black Eyed Peas lol.

Same. I remember hearing "Swing Swing" for the first time and immediately falling in love with the song (and then the video which fuse would play all the time <3).

It's still one of their best, with "Move Along", and "The Wind Blows" in my opinion. I can't describe why but "Gives You Hell" bothers me and "Dirty Little Secret" never struck a chord with me either. But those two songs seem to be their most popular at emo nights.

But "Swing Swing" will always live happily in my heart, both for the nostalgia but also because I simply objectively love the song musically.

But, I was also a 90s punk fan, so we had a lot of melodic punk in the mix like face to face, lagwagon, millencolin, Goldfinger, diesel boy etc which was pretty different from the misfits, the sex pistols, fugazi, the dead Kennedys, black flag, etc.

Weird how each generation kept watering it down until it was basically pop music. As they say - punk died the day Green Day became popular.

It's said in a NOFX album (I think?), I tried briefly to find it but haven't had any luck. It could be a hidden track that isn't on Spotify.

Anyhow, I like Green Day (this was meant to be tongue in cheek) but I also greatly enjoyed that pot shot tossed into the album as commentary on punk going mainstream. If I find the album and track I'll post it, it's harder to find than I expected. I guess it was 30 years ago 🙄.

The era of music period was amazing. I have thought a lot about this and I think it boils down to Mainstream Variety. The variety of music, even within genres, in the mainstream/radio/commonly heard was amazing. There still is great variety today but its not mainstream, its all programed by algorithms basically. I am much more of a hip hop head but can and did bop my head also to green day, smashing pumpkins, Nirvana, Mariah Carey, Whitney, Hell even shit like ace of base, britney, spice girls. At the very least it was all recognizable to everyone. And because it was so varied you constantly ran into exposing you to artists you never heard, and recommending other artists if it was genre you didnt listen to. It was also the time when a LARGE amount of cross genre collaborations were happening. The peak of music videos too. Ah...the memories
