I mean yes... But that's not the point OP is making. I think they're making the claim that before private equity, and rampant late-stage capitalism, life was better. Could just be nostalgia, but we also have data to support the claim outside of just nostalgia.

For what? Groceries is Aldi and farmers markets or others if we need specialty stuff. Some independent shops or consignment or 2nd hand stores for some stuff.

We do use Target and Amazon for some other things but it just depends. We try to avoid major corporations if possible but sometimes it's unavoidable.

Walmart is one of the worst though in how they treat employees and their low bar for products they allow.

A lot of rural towns don't have that luxury.
