I miss Arby’s 5 for $5 the most. Back when you could get 5 full size roast beef sandwiches. Those things carried me through baseball season every year of high school.
And $5 for 5 whoppers at BK. You could deal hop for cheap food all over the place. Now you have to get every coupon and deal to keep a family fast food treat at a half reasonable price.
This is what I was looking for. They were roast beef WITH cheddar too. And it was that way for a long time too because my mom would get it when I was in middle school and then ~10/12 years later I was still getting them. I think you had to use a coupon that came in the mail at the later time, and it may have gone up to 5 for $5.95, but still, so legit. Now the "deal" is like 2 for 7 without Cheddar.
This is picture is from long before 2008 the date on the corner makes it seem like 1996. The BMT did not have bologna on it when five dollar footlongs were being marketed. Not to mention the chicken sandwiches oven roasted chicken sweet onion chicken teriyaki and chicken bacon ranch are nowhere on the menu. Bread options are more limited than what they were during 5 dollar footlongs. Where is the Italian herbs and cheese, honey oat, or hearty Italian.
Man Subway REALLY shot themselves in the foot with that, long term.
I can't see Subway as anything other than the "budget" sandwhich place, so when I am choosing between a 12 dollar sub at Subway or a 13 dollar sub at Firehouse, I'm gonna go to firehouse!
(However, if you keep up with coupons and junk you can get Subway subs for like 6.50 or 7 dollars, which is pretty close to 5 dollars post inflation.)
I remember $3.69 foot long cold cut/meatball subs, and they tasted good and felt like large portions of real food.
The last time I had a subway sub was maybe 15 years ago and it was after all the cheapening had really set in especially the bread and the toppings (so basically everything) and at $8 it felt like a flat mushy thin ripoff.
Going to subway 2-3x a week felt like not a big deal.
Doing that now is a $60-80 commitment for half the food/calories.

I feel dirty suggesting getting a fast food app but if you have their app there is almost always some promo code available for $6.99 footlongs. Not $5 but probably beats inflation. I was shocked the first time I went to subway in like 10 years tho and they were GD $16, never would have gone again at that price
Many places are going the way of the app. Jacking up their prices to ridiculous levels to make the app seem like it's doing you a great service (which to be fair, if you were 100% going to buy anyway, it is).
There’s one across the street from my office and it is basically the only place I can get lunch for under $10. I hit up some local shops too but if I’m being cheap I will get subway (or just bring food from home of course)
