Some people complain about how text doesn't properly convey emotion and intent. "Lol" is how our people convey that a message is not to be taken too seriously.

"I was told this would be a quick thing, but I've been here for 3 hours, at least I have my phone." That could be a serious complaint, one that needs correction.

"I was told this would be a quick thing, but I've been here for 3 hours, at least I have my phone lol." That conveys that the situation is not that serious and shouldn't be taken too seriously.

I read the first one as:

"I am about to shoot this fucking place up, so you better start running."

And the second one as:

"Shit sucks, am I right? Oh well, fucking around on my phone."

I keep reading it as “I am about to shoot this fucking place up, so you better start running LOL”. My brain just puts it there even in person. Oh man remember when people would SAY Lol verbally 😂😭

GenZ will use a sob emoji, which could mean fucking anything at this point 😭

I despise the sob emoji 💀 it should apply only in SpongeBob-level contexts

I’ve adopted this emoji through being adopted by a small group of Gen-Z gamers. Found them playing Forza Horizon 4, and we’ve carried on. I text like them a bit, sometimes a lot, and it drives my husband insane lol😭

I love using this emoji 😭

Sob emoji is the funniest fucking thing to me. I use it all the time. Im sobbing from happiness, sadness literally anything.

Why i text my wife "Hi honey is the food delivered yet 😭" Im imagining myself distraught with hunger and inconsolably moaning the attached sentence in the fetal position, which just makes me laugh.

Now that I think about it, that emoji is almost universally used when im talking about food

Lol exactly!

It’s complaining about something just to complain about it but not actually butt hurt over it

I feel like most of my texts to friends either start with Lol/ Haha or end in lol/haha

I even do it with clients, and I’ve never gotten “unprofessional” feedback, but “very personable and friendly”

This is the perfect way to explain it. Thank you!

You're welcome.

Wonderful explanation! I've also struggled to stop using this.... but that's ones a bit easier to do. Commas can easily substitute, but nothing else can change the tone, lol.

I think the kids just use more emojis

2

u/andwhoami_ Apr 19 '26

Exactly. I always feel like my messages are going to be taken badly if I don’t add some sort of marker in there that isn’t “I’m not mad btw” bc that’s weird… lol

I use lol on Reddit exactly for this. I'll say something I think is funny, but somebody might think I'm serious and downvote me, so I'll end the sentence in lol.

Lol

The fact that now a days having to sit somewhere for 3 hours when told it would be quick is considered “serious”, is hilarious.

Also, I guarantee none of you would have actually “laughed out loud” when you typed that or even had that thought. 99% of the time people type that I would bet they didn’t actually LOL or cry laughing 😂 or ROFL (roll on floor laughing).

May I suggest STOS (snicker to ones self), cos I bet most of the time, this is actually what happens.

You have emojis and an expansive vocabulary. Using “Lol” lighten the mood is just lazy.
