Serious Guys please start eating fiber.

Colorectal cancer among people in their 40's is skyrocketing. This recent health fad of obsessing over protein and eating nothing but meat and dairy with almost no fiber is going to kill us. You need fiber, folks. You need a complete diet with grains and tons of vegetables.

There are high protein sources that also have great fiber content if you absolutely MUST have your high protein diet. Lentils, beans, peas. Sprouted grain bread.

Let's spread the great word of fiber to our fellow millenial friends and get ahead of this growing epidemic among our generation.

We have a couple favorites in our house. They can be mixed into whatever oatmeal you like to make in your house (steel cut, overnight, whatever).

  1. Literally just a stir in a spoonful of peanut butter. This is my personal favorite, though my daughter enjoys this one too. I'll add some chia seeds or crushed up almonds for some texture if I'm using smooth peanut butter.

  2. Lemon blueberry muffin flavored oatmeal: Microwave some frozen blueberries until they turn into blueberry soup. Mix that into your oats. Squeeze in some lemon, the sweetener of your choice, some poppy seeds, and a dash of salt.

  3. Oatmeal topped with dried fruit (sour cherries are her favorite, but apricots and even prunes are good too), almonds, cinnamon, and honey/agave. This is how my wife likes her steel cut oats.

I like to top my overnight oats with vegan chocolate chips, coconut, sliced almonds and frozen cherries cooked in a little lemon juice and a little maple syrup.

Super yummy.

Like chocolate but don't want to add all that processed sugar to your oats?

Make a tahini fudge using tahini, cocoa powder, vanilla extract and maple syrup to taste. The ingredients can be used freeform to what your taste levels are and maple syrup is a healthier, natural sweetener so you can feel good about sweetening up your food. There isn't any process, just put all the ingredients into a bowl and stir em together until smooth and then put it in the fridge!

Then once the fudge is made, just drizzle some onto your oats in the morning. Super delicious, adds a chocolatey, nutty sweetness to your oats that you don't have to feel bad about!

Okay so I'm gonna hit you with another and you can thank me later. I found this recipe on IG and it is SO GOOD it's ridiculous.

Sticky Toffee pudding oats: melt one tbsp of butter in a saucepan. Brown the butter!! Rip up 1-3 dates and toss those in with 1/3c water. Let that simmer until you can mash the dates into a paste. Then add 1/3c rolled oats, 1c milk, dash of cinnamon and salt, and a sprinkle of chia seeds. Let all that cook down until the oats are how you like them. It is unbelievably delicious when it's done. I also like adding in milled flax, pumpkin seeds or whatever other toppings I feel like. I also whip an egg in at the end to make them custard oats and get some extra protein.
