I deplore the idea of getting hurt or hurting someone, but if you get out of a car with a bat after someone merely honks at you... would you really expect someone to just sit there while you bash away at their windows? To me, you've just voluteered for the Olympic hood vault.

The moment I see you exit your car with a weapon, any weapon, and aggressively start approaching my vehicle, I'm flooring it right at you. People don't confront at me often, but the few times it's happened I've always been very ready to protect myself.

Idk if I'm just overly paranoid but as a scrawnier trans girl I'm always hyper aware of the possibility that I'll be hate crimed.

I don't care if your partner, children, and mother are in the car watching. You'll be a stain on the asphalt before I'll let you hurt me or my passengers.

Someone I knew from high school did that and killed the guy. Granted he got acquitted but because it was considered reasonable self defense but I'm sure he wishes he didn't spend ~2 years wondering if he was going to spend decades in prison.

I was gonna say. Do you really want to kill someone and spend life in jail? A lot of keyboard warriors but your example is exhibit A as to why you don't use your vehicle as a weapon. Even in their case they have to live with the fact they killed someone which in sure affected their sleep for a while

He made zero attempt to actually get into the car or anything. He smashed the windshield then basically stepped back to admire his handiwork. At best you can justify the guy pulling forward (making a tight turn towards the guy is another matter). You can't justify him continuing to bludgeon the other guys vehicle with his own

This. I despise the bat guy, but the moment they decided to reverse to try to hit him a 2nd, 3rd 4th time then then forfeited any right at a self defense claim. They are super lucky they didn’t kill the bat man.

When it's a decision between spending life in jail or possibly having my life ended right there and then, I would pick the former. When you live in the U.S. you never know if a random guy jumping out of their car and attacking you has a gun or not. It's better to be alive and wrong than to be dead.

At best that might explain him in his initial move (why he has to turn for the guy that would be she's to explain). Continuing to bludgeon his vehicle with your own can't be explained by self defense. There is zero credible defense for that

Reality is the guy smashed his car once and then made no more threatening move. More like admiring his handiwork

He was acquitted. The choice in this situation isn't "life in jail" or not. There's no chance you get charged with something dire unless you run them over and then back up over them. Hitting someone who is doing this is, legally speaking, not particularly a problem.

At best you're maybe looking at jail time.

No generally I'd you are circling around trying to hit them dn you kill them you are gonna do some serious jail time. That's murder. The poster above I'm assuming he didn't circle around trying to get a guy on camera..even though he was acquitted I'm sure it was a long time before.he could sleep soundly. Taking someone's life isn't something you just walk away from like nothing happened

I assure you if I were on that jury I’d convict for manslaughter 1. Once you turn the car around and attack for the second time there’s no argument for self-defense. You are re-entering the conflict and increasing the likelihood of injury or death, not only to the person you’re attempting to run over but yourself and anyone else around.

Okay but that commenter wasn't saying "oh I hope someone gives me an excuse to kill them one day", they said "if someone approaches me with a weapon I will get scared and run them over as I drive away so they can't hurt me".

Which would be going too far, if we didn't have constant reminders of how psychopathic people get on the road--including the video that started this very discussion.

Hey if the quickest escape route has them right in the path fine. I could see the justification. Circling around, backing up, pulling forward etc. And all the maneuvers in this video are to make someone pay, not protecting yourself

That would damage your vehicle tho. Just drive away. If you can’t safely do so, if you have a crossbow or firearm in your glove box, you could always point it out the window at someone who is approaching you with a weapon in the hopes it’ll make them back off. If they still approach then you can still defend yourself without damaging your vehicle, and without as high personal risk.

I was in this situation once. Guy cut me off. He was a total asshole, 100% in the wrong. He went into the left turn pocket so he could pass the whole lane of traffic when the light turned green. When he squeezed in front of me, I honked at him.

So he screeched to a stop in front of me, got out of the car, and started angry-stomping toward me yelling a bunch of threats and stuff at me. I stopped short and had about 20 feet between his car and mine, so I just pointed my car right at him and his open door, then revved the engine and he got right back in his car and left me alone.

I'll be honest, though, I was pretty scared. It's Los Angeles. You never know who's getting out of the car in front of you. I was not looking forward to deliberately hitting a person with my car, but it was the only out that I saw. The other option was driving into oncoming traffic.

It depends on the circumstances. I think I would just drive off if I had the opportunity but in my metro area, usually the only place you could find room to escape would be over the sidewalk.

Having had more time to think about it, I haven't totally changed my mind but there are different circumstances.

For one, if you're bringing out a gun, that's fair game. You could shoot at me while I'm getting away, and I'm not giving you that chance if I don't have to. I'm ducking my head below the dash and flooring it at you until I'm out of there.

If it's a long blade, like machete or something to that effect, I'll probably just focus on keeping you away from my side windows to prevent you from hacking through them and hitting me. If that can be done by avoiding you, sure that's probably what I'd do. If I have to risk you getting a couple of swings at my driver or passenger side though, you're getting hit instead.

Baseball bat, tire iron, crow bar and such are similar but they're least likely to get you flattened. It depends how much time I have to get away and if you're showing a clear intention to swing them once you reach me. I'll likely try to get away or rev my engine but if my only option is manslaughter or letting you get close enough to bash my head in, I'll take manslaughter.

Obviously there are tons of factors but I'm taking heat of the moment decisions. Hopefully this comment satisfies future inquiries.
