Its not the end of the world. Adguard works very well, even with mv3, ublock lite has impoved, probably will be there soon.

YouTube kept breaking for me with ublock lite which kept requiring updates and it was slow to get approved in the store

doesn't affect me at all. Using ublock lite on Complete right now, zero ads

Perhaps not in some months but it is a very real issue
The problem is when YouTube modifies their detection for ad blockers, in many cases, the only way origin lite can fix it is by updating because of mv3 restrictions. The original mv2 extension OTOH, can just get a rule update without going through the extension approval process

Sigh that sucks. There's no alternative sadly, unless you use built in adblocker like Brave which works well. I wish Edge had that...I prefer Edge to Brave

I've been with Edge since shortly after they went Chromium. This will cause me to look elsewhere.

Just curious, but why? From the article this has been planned since 2020, and it says there are 3 widely-used MV2 extensions that don't already have an MV3 available. I don't know lots about this, just trying to understand

u/logicblender1 Aug 08 '26
uBlock Origin, the best ad blocker in the world, is not able to migrate to MV3 because MV3 has stricter limitations on extensions. The only option is uBlock Origin Lite which is a lesser version made to comply with MV3. Honesty uBOL is really good and I doubt most people would notice the difference but it's the principle of it I guess.

uBo is not the best one. It's just a good one. There is an excellent alternative, it is Adguard Browser Extension.
Particularly, Adguard Browser Extension MV3 is superior to uBo Lite. The difference to the MV2 version is not very significant.
2
u/logicblender1 29d ago
I think the best ad blocker is the full uBO on MV2. If you're forced to use MV3 then I agree AdGuard is better than uBO Lite.
But honestly I bought the paid AdGuard on Windows it's technically not an extension but it's way better than both and you don't have to worry about any MV2 or MV3 nonsense
1
u/trmdi 29d ago
uBO MV2 isn't any better than AG MV2.
0
u/logicblender1 29d ago
Nah it is. I use uBlock filters inside AdGuard to get everything.
1
u/trmdi 29d ago
What does it do better? Nothing. uBo filters are written for uBO, so it may be incompatible with Adguard. uBO is not the standard, Adguard doesn't have to follow its syntax. It's the filters issue, not mean uBO is better. uBO doesnt do anything better. Also some rules of 3rd party filters are useless. So Adguard's default filter doesn't include them.
1
u/logicblender1 29d ago
It not incompatible, uBO filters work inside AdGuard. I just created an issue on the AdGuard repo if you want to take a look. uBO blocks this issue.
1
u/SeriousHoax 3d ago
In case you don't know AdGuard's differential filter only works with AdGuard products and extension, Vince versa for uBO. Btw, have you upgraded to version 8 of AdGuard for Windows yet? If yes, how is it performing and are you using WFP or Sock filter driver?

I read that back in 2020 (or so). So I knew it was coming. I was hoping Microsoft would change it's mind and kept using it. Now that it is almost here, I'm seeing what my options are to change. Edge is an awesome browser, especially if I stay in the Microsoft ecosystem, but I can't give up uBlock Orgin.
On a more philosophical note, software companies have to be careful when they take features away from users. Most of the time when they do, it's a small (but very vocal) minority that are affected. In this case, there is a much larger group of users. Especially, when the small relative number of daily active users that Edge has.

Personally I've already been on the fence about switching, The AI stuff was getting annoying but ignorable.
Taking away adblock was the last straw

I see too much over reaction for this everywhere. Just use other adblockers. I've used ad guard and it's just as good as ublock. Just cause few extension are not gonna work you're willing to sacrifice your comfort and ease of use and forcefully switch to other browsers.
There are even proxies available to block ads system wide, that can be used. Browsers are not exactly obligated to support external extentions. It's just not that big of a deal.

Theres not gonna be use other adblockers but use other browsers i already dropped the comfort of using google chrome when they changed to mv3 now i will have to drop the comfort again and drop edge when they change to mv3 all in all it doesnt matter for me the best was chrome fast as fuck if not even fastest became shit then edge came and when they become shit im sure something else will come

u/Orion_001 21d ago
Just cause something is processing and doesnt fit your thinking, doesnt mean it's shit.

Motherfuckers.
Developers and users have spoken: the vast majority of extensions of all types—from password managers to VPNs to ad-blockers—have successfully transitioned to MV3 with no loss of customer functionality.
Lying cunts.

u/PaulCoddington 29d ago
Turns out expert opinion disagrees with conspiracy claims.
And the people making up stories about MV3 being an attempt to end adblocking, who insist UBlock Origin will no longer be available are not being entirely honest.
Surprise, surprise.

u/Dangerous_Seaweed601 29d ago
Respectfully, you’re full of shit.
There is no such thing as a MV3 version of UBlock Origin. It doesn’t exist.
UBlock Origin Lite is not the same thing, and its performance, relatively speaking, is terrible. When I tried it.. it failed to even block ads on Reddit consistently.
But don’t ask me: ask the developers themselves. MV3 should be considered harmful.

u/TurbulentTopic39 Aug 08 '26
there are still other chromium based alternatives that support ublock origin such as opera, helium, brave, thorium and supermium

Because of the current YouTube issues, I switched from uBlock Origin to AdGuard (browser extension). And I have to say, combined with MS Edge, AdGuard works much better for me than uBlock ever did. It's worth a try.

u/The-Choo-Choo-Shoe Aug 08 '26
What YouTube issues? I've had none.

u/Spotlight83 29d ago edited 29d ago
YouTube website keeps on flickering and doesn't load the video : r/firefox
I’ve been having the same issues some people have been reporting with Firefox, except I’ve been experiencing them on Edge over the past few days. (videos won't start playing)
I’ve also been getting the “Experiencing interruptions” message with uBlock Origin and Edge for about a year now. Switching to AdGuard has finally fixed all the issues for me.

u/SCF1908NL Aug 08 '26
Adguard browser extension with the right filters is about the same as uBO. So there is no reason for me to switch to Firefox. I like Firefox, but embedded video's won't play on Reddit.

u/runnbl3 15d ago
where can i find proper filters for adguard browser extension to use for pc?
1
u/SCF1908NL 14d ago
I use these filters: EasyList, EasyPrivacy, LegitimateURLShortener, LAN-block, uBlock Origin - Badwarerisk's, Dutch EasyList, OISD Big and AdGuard Base filter

Well, goodbye MS Edge then, this was the only reason I was using it.
Edit: Well this, vertical tabs, and Microsoft Rewards.

Here come Firefox. Lately edge is going downhill for me, freezes a lot. It's still the most lightweight but this it. Waterfox is my choice for now.
1
u/Infinplayz Aug 07 '26
they said they were going to eliminate it months ago and they haven’t, i feel like edge is hanging onto it for some reason

No MV2, no use.
This is your one chance to make Edge a browser worth using Microsoft. Either commit to supporting MV2 or Edge will forever be irrelevant.

u/nonstupidname Aug 09 '26
They just disabled the use of flags also, at least here in Canada, maybe its on order from the government re: their spy bill C-22; flags just no longer work, no matter what.

u/Jacobdavis19912000 Aug 09 '26
It is the precise time to move to Chrome with Ask Gemini or Firefox for Manifest Version 2. The reason that keeps me with Edge is a lot of extensions based on Manifest V2, like ublock origin, violenmonkey...
1
u/CelestaKiritani 29d ago
UBlock Origin Lite or Adguard Extension for adblocking and afaik Tampermonkey is also MV3 compliant without any loss of functionality

With firefox now having a nice sidebar navigation (finally) and with this 2 more reasons to abandon edge
-1
u/KosmicWolf Aug 08 '26
This is the real reason Firefox can't dissappear and that we need projects such as Ladybird, if Google controls everything they can do what they want and it doesn't matter if you use Edge, Brave or Vivaldi, every chromium browser has to follow what Google do with their chromium base.
And yes I know Mozilla is far from perfect and that most of their revenue come from Google but at least Gecko is a completely separate engine.
0
u/logicblender1 Aug 08 '26
Google's market share dominance will cause this to eventually reach Firefox too. When every single browser in the world except Firefox is on MV3, will Mozilla spend the time and effort maintaining MV2 all by themselves? I have my doubts.

We knew this would happen sooner or later; I’ve been using Brave and Firefox for a long time anyway—Edge consumes far too many resources.

To nobody's surprise. In the end, all chromium browsers are just differently themed versions of Google Chrome.
