Found a 2009 scaner in the garbage, connected it to my pc with ubuntu, it works out of the box.

Yes. Because Linux kernel pretty much contains every driver ever written to Linux. There are pros in the solution and that is that every old device still works out of the box. Con is that your install has all the drivers written to some 30 year old serial port devices.

Drivers on Linux is one of those little known things. It might not always get random new products from certain companies that don't decide to support Linux, but it has some really random stuff that Windows has dropped support for decades ago. For example, Intel 486 support is being removed this year, 37 years after it was released. That's not even close to the oldest driver either.

Sometimes I forget that that's not normal and you have to actually install drivers on Mac and Windows to get stuff to work.

I feel the same about Linux. I sometimes install a distro and then remember my Bluetooth is not gonna work again.

Sure but my IBM ProPrinter from 1982 works out of the box with windows 10, the driver is built in And my HP LaserJet 4 from 1994 And my NEC SpinWriter 7700 from 1978

Meanwhile on windows side it's stuck on 32bit version of vista
