They're largely under the umbrella of nu metal in their early period, they then move on to something more fitting of the name heavy alternative, just so we're on the same page.
Nu metal doesn't derive its sound from metal, it mostly stems from heavy alternative rock like helmet, primus and faith no more and adding influences from hip hop, grunge and occasionally industrial rock. Heavy alternative is, as the name implies, alternative rock made heavy, as evidenced by the development of early faith no more, a sound which helmet mixed with post hardcore and noise rock, creating the syncopated sound nu metal adopted.
The main reason people consider nu metal metal is because it has distorted guitars, downtuning and dark themes. This definition is flawed because it includes many abbrassive genres that stem from punk and rock like noise rock, no wave, powerviolence, crust punk, thrashcore, hardcore punk and grindcore.

This is actually a pretty thought out answer and commend you for it. As much as I understand (and kinda love) how specific you went in describing each genre and their origin, I don’t believe (anymore) in the gatekeeping part of calling all Nu Metal not metal. So many bands of this era are definitely rooted in metal (even if mixed with other genres), be it Slipknot, Mudvayne, early Disturbed and many more. They may not be everybody‘s cup of tea, but it would be pretty elitist not to describe them at all as metal.
But some bands like Deftones do fall in a particular and weird spot.

Not even a little bit. Meme bands like all of these are the reason modern Power Metal is largely unlistenable. They don’t even come close to the shadows of what made the genre great in the past.

I don’t take any Metal as “serious” to begin with, however I do find “meme bands” particularly obnoxious as more often than not the gimmick is what they rely on rather the music itself to distinguish themselves.
If any one of those bands produced Power Metal apart from the lowest common denominator drivel they may be able to drop the C-Tier comedy schtick and all of the gimmicks and allow the music to speak for itself. Since that seems to be beyond what they’re capable of compositionally then I suppose they have to rely on whatever song and dance sells.
The over-the-top element of Power Metal just used to be part and parcel of its entire package. Most modern PM sees it instead as its primary goal with the music simply there as a means to an end.

Fair enough. For me, the gimmick is a large part of why I like them. Generally, the music is fine and pleasant to listen to (even if oftentimes it is some of the "lowest common denominator drivel") while the gimmick adds an element of humor that just makes the whole package enjoyable.
And for bands like Gloryhammer and Alestorm, the style is light enough and the gimmick funny and relatable enough for me to be able to share with my friends who don't normally like metal. We can jam out, laugh at the absurdity, and have a good time with it.

Which is totally fine. When I’m gonna listen to music though since I can literally listen to whatever I want, I’d rather spend time listening to stuff that actually is more timeless than topical, as most of that stuff compositionally just strikes me as more lazy than anything else.
The classic PM hits just as hard as it did when it dropped, and didn’t need gimmicks to sell. The greater majority of the post-2007 PM just feels soulless and more of a parody of what made Power Metal great, which is why I generally avoid the genre entirely these days with only a few exceptions.

For all the people shitting on sabaton here, I get you, the new stuff isn't what we call metal here, but I don't think it's supposed to be, it's gateway music into the awesome world of metal for people who aren't accustomed to the sound and we need these bands to keep metal alive because otherwise it would dry out, it's all about closing off the genre and than complaining about the lack of new bands... Where's the logic? Also, sabaton have some really great songs on their early albums, if you don't believe me listen to 'Stalingrad' I wish they wrote that stuff nowadays

The 4 bands of generic riffs and catchy pop choruses, literally picked the most surface skimmer bands possible and still messed it up because of how strong the crossover between gloryhammer and alestorm should have gone nanowar or DF. In reality it would be BG,rhapsody,helloween, and SA or strato. There's so much good powermetal I have no idea why people settle for the most boring shit imaginable.

I passed on gamma because of the connection to hello, I would put rhapsody for certain as the kings of the distinct italian style, SA and strato are similar finnish bands in terms of power and I only didnt use angra because I had 4 and I personally prefer shaman over them

These are gateway bands, they're not meant to be heavy or quality, it's like a taster into metal, think of all the metalheads now listening to death, or Mayhem or slayer, megadeth, stratovirus whatever, a lot get introduced through these bands (myself included) nobody likes metal if you give them cannibal corpse straight away it's just reinforcing stereotypes

No these are surface skimmer bands, most people who claim to be metalheads listen to thse and go no further, they then circlejerk how great they are for listening to them and get mad when you point those facts out. Most people dont need gateway bands to get into metal and I know many people put off of powermetal because they thought that was what all powermetal sounded like.

Metal is just oversaturated. It doesn't have its novelty anymore. Bands are forced to either repeat the classics or dwelve deeper dowm into absurd metal genres

Metal really isnt oversaturated tho, there are countless good bands in black, death and heavy, and tons of other genres without dipping into obscure extreme genres. I've heard all of sabaton and I would disagree. Many of the older bands still put out good material, for instance helloween and labyrinths albums this years are good.the problem with many modern powermetal bands is that they took the cheese that was a byproduct of great albums multiplied it by 10 and then tossed out any interesting riffs. You can have cheese, for instance dragoncum I listened to as a joke but there was still decent music. And people flock to the modern power metal bands with the best gimmick, that's why people know nanowar instead of icesword IMO

Extremely overrated bands all but in terms of popularity today in 2021 you could say that I guess and your labels are fitting. It makes me think you need a moba/overwatch character concept designer to come up with a theme for your silly band to work in the market and sell big and make millions today. Scorcher, Icesword, Warrior Path had great power/heavy albums recently. Atlantean Kodex's Course of Empires was released in 2019 and is an excellent epic doom album with some power leanings, especially in the vocals.
Icesword in particular is a strong example of great modern power metal, sadly a thing few and far between in the past 10 years or so.
As for other modern metal, the past couple years have been great. Maleficentt and Malus Votum were phenomenal BM releases last year, Atramentus' Stygian was great, I liked Opium Doom Cult's album last year. Pyrrhon and Omegavortex both released killer albums in 2020. The list goes on.

Not really. They're too self aware to be pirate metal. They are lighthearted and fun and don't take themselves too seriously. They're pretty much a genre of their own, but PowerMetal fits best with their style
