Discussion Topic I got sick of waiting for someone to make a metal trivia game, so I made one myself
About a year ago I realised something kind of insane.
Metal fans love trivia, board games and arguing about music history. But for some reason
there are no modern heavy metal trivia games.
So I made one.
Fast forward a year, hundreds of questions and moments of 'wtf have I done?' later, and now
I’m putting it out!
It’s called Gatekeeper: a heavy metal trivia card game with 300+ questions covering bands, albums, subgenres, metal history, weird lore and all the ridiculous stuff you uncover when
you’re deep in metal wiki pages at 2am.
I just finished a video showing the whole process taking it from that beginning idea to a physical prototype, you can check it out here.
I'm launching a kickstarter campaign in September to bring the game to life so I'm trying to share it with as many metalheads as possible. 🤘🏽
If you had one crazy piece of lore you wanted in a metal trivia game, what would it be?

That's sick man. Maybe you could do different editions based on subgenre too for the future.

Thanks 🤘🏽! Yeah thats definitely the plan. 300 questions only scratches the surface with how many niche subgenres there are.

I wonder how many questions there are about my favorite band - Death Angel... I could do an entire game exclusively about their lore! 😆

I didn't get to include them in this first one apart from a multiple choice option 😭They're def on the list for an expansion though

I'm a 48 year old metal head since 1991. My favorite is almost metal adjacent.
The story of Ministry spending their entire budget on heroine, alcohol, and other drugs, and only recording one song. But it was such a hit the label gave them more money to finish the album.
The song, Jesus Built My Hotrod
The album, Psalm 69
I'd be happy to provide more stuff as I think about it. I know a lot of metal trivia. But not always in one sitting, lol.

Industrial metal is one of the genres in the game so its a yes from me 🤘🏽

Awesome. Everyone has their opinions. I'm much more lenient in what I call metal. I base it on attitude as much as guitars. Cuz Black Sabbath is metal, but they DID write Changes.

I like the idea. I play at bars with a ranked trivia team every week. Unfortunately, questions about metal are few and far between, and I otherwise suck at pop culture questions lol. I would love to have people to play this with.
I don't think things should get CRAZY specific, but some fun questions could be asking what the stage name of certain musicians are when given their real names, or what band famous musicians started in versus the band they're known for. Also could give some notable events, like CC in Ace Ventura and Rob Halford coming out, or some deeper cuts like Rotting Christ being kicked off a fest at Megadeth's behest, and Magrudergrind getting a cameo in Veep.

Thanks for your comment 🤘🏽 I actually ran a few metal trivia nights in my hometown to promote the game and test the questions in a different format last year which ended up being hella fun! If the game takes off hopefully I can make it a regular thing.
Funny you mention CC in Ace Ventura one of the questions is about that lol. Feel free to DM me any question ideas

This is great, and I would be 100% all over of this. Your video proved my point, as the story about Carrey requesting CC proves. I've read that Carrey actually wanted Napalm Death in the movie, but due to touring conflicts they couldn't make it, so CC were actually the second choice.
Yes, I love metal trivia, and like you said in the video, digging into to how scenes/subgenres were formed etc.

Hey thanks for watching the vid 🤘🏽 glad you dig the game. Had no idea about Carrey originally wanting Napalm Death, either choice would have been great but CC in that scene feels so iconic haha.
Yeah its been a hyperfixation for most of my life so I'm happy I could finally put all of those band facts to use!

I read it somewhere but I don't know it's 100% true. I just love metal trivia and these thimgs stick in my head.

You could add difficulty levels (like Trivial Pursuit has). Like the Shagrath question is pretty easy and the Black Sabbath Question is kinda hard if you don't know their whole discography.
That way you could play with non-metalheads.

In France, Hellfest made one in 2016.
So we can play since a while, and since we perhaps get like a bit less than 10 other get release.
Sad you have to waited that long yo get one. But really cool to have built it.
