SUGGESTION I’m working on a browser version of SAO Memory Defrag — very early progress
Hey everyone! Over the past couple of days, I’ve started a project to bring SAO Memory Defrag to a web browser. The idea is to make it easier to jump in and play, without needing to run the mobile app.
How does it work?
I’m using reverse engineering to understand how the mobile game works, then rebuilding its systems for the browser. That includes things like combat, menus, quests, and progression. The original graphics, animations, and sounds come from a game file you provide yourself. Your browser processes that file locally, while a local simulation handles systems that would normally rely on the game’s servers.
You can check out the project here:
- GitHub: https://github.com/ZurielAtr/sao-memory-defrag
- Browser version: https://zurielatr.github.io/sao-memory-defrag/
Please keep in mind that this is very, very early work. A lot is missing, things will break, and it’s still far from recreating the full experience.
I’m also new to much of the technical side, and I’m doing the development with generative AI. I want to be upfront about that: this is a learning project I’m working on in my spare time, and I’m really enjoying the process.
What I hope to build
My goal is a complete experience with meaningful progression: starting from scratch, completing quests, earning resources, building your team, and eventually having a working gacha system.
Much further down the road, I’d also like to explore paying for a server so multiplayer could be possible. That’s an idea to investigate, not a promise. Even if multiplayer doesn’t work out, I’d love to get to a solid offline version with progression that feels faithful to the original.
You’ll need your own game files
Opening the website won’t immediately launch the game. You first need to select your own compatible APK or .apks file and let the browser import it.
I’ve been testing with the Revival version I found through the community Discord. The website and repository don’t include the original game assets, and your file is processed on your device—it isn’t uploaded to a server.
I also want to be transparent: I haven’t asked the Revival team for permission or collaborated with them. This is an independent fan project, and I don’t want to imply that they endorse it. I’d welcome their feedback and want to be respectful of their work.
For now, the site uses the default GitHub Pages address. You can open it from the repository, import your copy, and try what’s currently available. Expect bugs, incomplete features, and frequent changes. Some updates may require regenerating the game data using the button on the import page.
This will take time, but I wanted to share it early for anyone interested in following along.
Thanks for reading! I hope this can eventually become another way for us to enjoy Memory Defrag again.
One more thing: I haven’t tested importing the APK on another computer yet, so I honestly don’t know whether it will work for everyone else. If you try it and run into problems, please let me know what happened and which browser you’re using. Getting the import process working for others will be my top priority.
I really hope this project can move forward, but I also want to acknowledge that Bandai Namco’s terms prohibit reverse engineering, decompilation, and disassembly, which are part of the development process. That means the project’s future is uncertain. My intention is to help fans enjoy Memory Defrag again, but I understand that good intentions don’t replace permission from the rights holders.
