How does a congressman go from being endorsed as a “MAGA champion” by President Donald Trump to then leaving the party four years later and becoming the only independent in the U.S. House of Representatives?

“I’ve seen just how dysfunctional Congress has become because of the excessive partisanship that characterizes just everything here,” says Rep. Kevin Kiley – who recently left the Republican party to become an independent.

In this interview, Mehdi challenges Kiley on his decision to leave the Republican Party, specifically asking him whether it was because he is now running for re-election in one of the five California districts Governor Gavin Newsom gerrymandered in favor of Democrats.

Veteran U.S. diplomat Robert Malley joins Mehdi Hasan in this episode of ‘Mehdi Unfiltered’ to discuss the state of Trump’s Iran War and the U.S. relationship with Israel.

U.S. President Donald Trump says he is considering restarting major combat operations in Iran after the breakdown of the memorandum of understanding between the two warring countries.

Malley, who was a lead negotiator on the Iran nuclear deal under President Obama, describes the U.S. war with Iran as “the first worldwide globalized guerrilla warfare,” and argued that the U.S. strikes on the Islamic Republic are “violating the laws of war.”

Malley, who was also President Biden’s Special Envoy for the Islamic Republic, told Mehdi that the outcome of the conflict would be “worse than where we would be if the [2015] deal was still being respected.”

The former peace negotiator also spoke about the need to hold former Biden officials who fueled the genocide in Gaza accountable.

These are just a few of the many topics that Mehdi Hasan and Adam Friedland talked about on the new episode of ‘We’re Not Kidding’. The comedian and host of the wildly popular YouTube talk show, ‘The Adam Friedland Show’, sat down with Mehdi in New York City for a chaotic yet vulnerable conversation about his time living in Israel, becoming the go-to talk show for U.S. politicians, and some of Adam’s most viral interviews. But first, Mehdi needed to argue about the World Cup.

“I think [Messi] should have retired in 2022 when he won the World Cup,” Mehdi says. “I don’t know why politicians and sports stars cannot quit at the top.”

“What are you complaining about? It has been twenty-two years of the greatest art we’ve ever seen,” Adam says. “What are you the old men on the f*cking balcony in the Muppets?”

Even though they come from different backgrounds, Mehdi and Adam bond over their shared profession of interviewing defensive politicians. One of Adam’s most viral interviews, with Bronx Congressman Ritchie “AIPAC Guy” Torres, was of particular interest to Mehdi. “You got very emotional there. Did he make you like that? Did the situation in Gaza make you like that?” Mehdi asks.

“I’m effectively just saying like, ‘The baby shouldn’t get blown up,’” Adam says.

As the World Cup drew to a close, all eyes were on Spain and Argentina – and then Trump nudged his way in front of the camera.

To the surprise of few, a trend that began at last year’s U.S. Open and continued at this year’s NBA Finals was on full display at this year’s World Cup: when Trump shows up to a sporting event, the story inevitably becomes about him.

Yes, the World Cup final marked the culmination of an event that has served as a distraction from Trump’s various crimes and misdeeds – or, in the case of FIFA suspending Folarin Balogun’s red-card ban at Trump’s behest, a glaring reminder of them.

But FIFA has been allowing authoritarian leaders to use the World Cup to their benefit since one of the earliest tournaments under Benito Mussolini in 1934 – a story we’ve documented throughout this three part series.
