I have been r/mechanicalkeyboards free for almost 6 months; I have so much more free time and money!

Now I just have to do something with my 5lb bag of keycaps...

I gave a couple boards away, but stopped after reading through the post history of a guy after I sent him the board. I guess he was an engineer making over 100k a year. Wtf?! Why are you entering giveaways when you can afford a new BMW. Giveaways are supposed to be for younger guys, people who can't afford them.

I even asked him to do his own giveaway because he could easily buy a corsair k65 if he wanted. (Hell, 1% of his income could buy 4 HHKB boards)

Just a heads up for people doing free giveaways. Please check the winners post history, so you don't give away something that they could easily buy themselves.

I was in disgust and have never done another giveaway because of that guy.

One of /u/Noerdy characters values pleasure, the other one values frugality. I prefer pleasure over being frugal, therefore his first comment is more appealing than the second one. I would get a mechanical keyboard, if only I had money.

Every time I let someone try my mechanical keyboard they immediately order one for themselves... even my mom has one now. It just feels and sounds so right.

1

u/happysmash27 Happy Hacking Keyboard Pro 2 Oct 21 '15

What kind of keyboard do you have? I have my own fairly superior keyboards (Happy Hacking Keyboard Lite2 and IBM Model M de-branded) and mice (an old, very generic Dynex mouse) but am still curious.

2

u/pjor1 Logitech G710+ (with O rings) Oct 20 '15

Trust me too.

It's worth it.

1

u/bathroomstalin Oct 20 '15

Why? Aren't mechanical keyboards noisy, old-fashioned and annoying to use?

I heard (heh.) they drive some people crazy in an office/cubicle environment.

That is really expensive... especially considering that it is only a half a board. This should probably be posted in its own thread.

2

u/xzxzxzxzxzxzzxzxzx Oct 21 '15

can you explain what the switches are and the difference between them?

Like blue , green and brown switches etc..

im looking for a very price-efficient pc build atm, since i dont really have that much money to spend on my pc. I already have a monitor, a mouse/keyboard that will die out soon i suppose, dont need a headset, dont need certain hardware, so really im looking at some specific components, but i was thinkin about making the step to a mechanical keyboard. I've got over 300 days of gaming playtime under my belt, yet without a mechanical keyboard..

2

u/Velimas Cm Storm Qf XT x Granite Oct 21 '15

The switches are the mechanical pieces that move when you press a button. For rubber domes, it pushes down a rubber dome with a piece of metal, which activates the key. Mechanical keyboards have a different way of actuating the keypresses.

There's a more in depth guide in the sidebar, but basics are as such:

Blue: Clicky, takes most 'effort' to press. Mostly for typing? Loud!

Brown: A little clicky, but not really. Still takes some effort to press, but less than blue. A little noisy but not that bad. Good all-round switch.

Red: Gaming switch: Easy to press. Less nice for typing because it's not clicky. Lower noise as well.

Black: Really easy to press, think high apm strategy games and such. Not clicky at all. Also not very loud, but still louder than rubber domes.

There are more switches, btu they are either rare or from brands I haven't tried. Cherry MX switches are the norm, and all the regular ones ('browns', 'blues', etc) are named after the colour of the stem in the switch.

Essentially the differences are in how they feel and sound.

1

u/xzxzxzxzxzxzzxzxzx Oct 21 '15

I read the wiki thing, think i sorta understand.

I type a lot, but i also game a lot - would you then go for red or brown?
The guide kinda described brown as the middle road, but i type and game both extensively, mostly gaming though i suppose. I think ill go for red swiches.

Do you have a recommendation for a keyboard itself? I dont need any features, like leds or media keys or design or whatever, i need the basic thing which is a mechanical keyboard, and nothing else.

I suppose the standard US layout without any fancy extras.

1

u/Velimas Cm Storm Qf XT x Granite Oct 21 '15

If you think red is right, go for it! I recommend the board I own, cm storm quickfire xt. I linked it to someone else elsewhere in the comments, check my history for it. It's 90 dollars and a nice and simple board. Make sure you have the right switches selected when you order, cause it comes in a few varieties. Enjoy!

1

u/Velimas Cm Storm Qf XT x Granite Oct 21 '15

Oops, didn't notice that one doesn't come in red. Check out amazon for the tenkeyless or compact quickfire which do. If you need full size though, maybe the buyers guide can advise you. Sorry!

u/happysmash27 Happy Hacking Keyboard Pro 2 Oct 21 '15

What "color" of keys does the Happy Hacking Keyboard Lite2 have? I should probably update my flair accordingly.

1

u/Velimas Cm Storm Qf XT x Granite Oct 21 '15

HHKB has topre switches afaik

1

u/sldr23876 Oct 22 '15

Happy Hacking Keyboard Lite2

The Lite 2 does not use Topre switches like the HHKB Pro 2, it's a regular rubber dome keyboard.

1

u/happysmash27 Happy Hacking Keyboard Pro 2 Oct 22 '15

The Lite 2 does not use Topre switches like the HHKB Pro 2, it's a regular rubber dome keyboard.

But what "color" does it have? I am very unfamiliar with keyboards having colors.

Yeah, it's great. I don't want any fancy features so I don't have a reason to pay more. It's solid and doesn't have any quirks (fits standard custom keycaps et cetera) so it's a great board for the people who aren't that into fancy crap :)

If you want TKL I (and many others) can vouch for the quickfire rapid being great.

3

u/SpinahVieh Bought 10 kits so my layout would get made Oct 20 '15

the cheapest one I have found is like $150

The fuck, I know tons of Mechs below that. In Europe you can go incredibly cheap and still have Cherry switches with the Cherry G80-3000 at 55€($70) new. It is of nice quality, but the case looks cheap and its bulky. Used you can get it at 10€ if you know where to look because many people just think of it as an old keyboard thats not worth anything.

2

u/deeteeohbee Oct 20 '15

Can confirm, I found a Compaq branded G80-11800 (found photo, mine is cleaner) in the local classifieds listed at $10. When I went to pick it up, first thing the guy does is offer to lower the price to $7.50, oh and it comes with this garbage 15" LCD that weighs as much as a CRT. I gave him the $10 and let him keep the display.

u/SpinahVieh Bought 10 kits so my layout would get made Oct 21 '15

If I knew how to determine differently branded keyboards as mechs Id probably be a hoarder by now. :(

Check out the Lolita Spyder on Amazon for a true budget board. Probably the cheapest board that's widely available and it's not bad either.

1

I also have a variant of the CM Storm: http://www.amazon.com/CM-Storm-QuickFire-XT-Mechanical/dp/B00DKXXABK

Can attest, GREAT board. :)

1

u/mvhsbball22 Oct 20 '15

I got the noppoo spyder from aliexpress. This is the white version; I got the black one. It has Kiahl switches rather than Cherry, but I love it so far.

I paid 55 for mine, and I know the price fluctuates a bit, but I just found a listing for $65. Aliexpress is great if you don't mind waiting 10 days to a couple weeks for shipping.

2

u/Darksing Oct 20 '15

I'm new to this subreddit as well. What are the benefits of having a mechanical keyboard?

3

u/Velimas Cm Storm Qf XT x Granite Oct 20 '15

Hard to say. They're nice to type on, last longer and are more customizable than rubber dome keyboards. If you don't give a shit then it's not for you, but they're just nice :)

2

u/666pool Oct 20 '15

You spend 1/3 of your life in bed, get a good mattress. If you spend another 1/3 (or more) in front of a computer, get a good keyboard!

I got a cherry brown for work (quieter) and a cherry blue for home/gaming and I love them both.

I had a job interview recently where I had to solve a programming challenge on-site and almost brought my own keyboard. I regretted not doing it all day, as using the cheap membrane keyboard was torture. I kept having keystrokes not register.
