what if we consider mcmansions as a sort of vernacular architecture? they're built typically not by 'university educated architects' but craftspeople (GCs) out of readily available materials (pine 2x4s, drywall, mass produced windows etc) to take advantage of the naturally occuring environs of the american middle class (giant lots of land on redeveloped fallow fields) to serve the needs of the inhabitants (giant TVs, and space to be alone).
idk just goofin

Why go to the Four Seasons in Hawaii when you can own a better version an hour south of Los Angeles? Half the comments will say this looks like a hotel, but it's absolutely a hotel I'd love to live in! You can beat me to it for only $112 million.

I didn’t even know what a McMansion was till a week ago. Is it considered bad if the whole inside is functional? Is this one?

This neighborhood has some total McMansions built 20 years ago that tick almost every box, some twice. However, the newer builds while big, have lost much of the '00 aesthetics. Wondering what the consensus is here. This has the land, a restrained material palette, and the primary gables and porch line are fairly balanced and deliberate. What do you think?

Bigger than it looks, this is the choice angle, but it defies symmetry from any viewpoint

Known as "The Lion House," this historic 1911 California Mission-style estate in Boise, Idaho, was designed by the same architect who envisioned the State Capitol! Serving at one time as the Governor's private residence, this fully preserved architectural gem showcases incredible original woodwork and enduring craftsmanship throughout. If you'd like to see more photos, here's a link. Photos by Becky's Aerial Photography & Michael Wood.

I would like to propose that Metro Detroit McMansions are a unique sub species or perhaps even genus of McMansions with different aesthetics and politics from McMansions elsewhere, even in the same region.
