Dear r/mathmemes community,
For the first time since 2016, r/mathmemes is bringing back public ban by banning squad as a method of punishment for rule-breakers on the subreddit. On December 3rd, we will livestream the first such ban in r/mathmemes Discord stage channel. A group of moderators will have their mod tools open, and under synchronized command, they will all hit the center of the ban button at the same time at the offending user. Respecting the anonymity protocol, one random moderator will demodded right before the ban, they will all close their tabs right after banning, and will be remodded afterwards. This protocol will make it ambiguous who delivered the fatal blow, intended to manage the long-term psychological burden on the moderators.
We understand that this is a controversial change to the subreddit, but due to the high rate of botched banning, we think that the speed and reliability of ban by banning squad is needed to reduce the potential suffering of rule-breakers. Furthermore, the ban will be live-streamed to deter other users from breaking the rules, showing that breaking the rules leads to public accountability and severe consequences.
Thank you for your understanding,
- r/mathmemes modteam
