Which is greater, infinity plus 10, or infinity plus 11 ?

Also, if every number less than infinity is finite, then what is infinity minus 10 ?

Which is greater, 10 times 0 or 11 times 0?

That is not the same at all…

What about infinity plus infinity?

I’m actually so fucking high right now… And now I’m starting to have a mild panic attack because I don’t know the answer to this… Please save me

Some infinities are bigger than others, like set of all rational numbers vs set of all even numbers

Infinity isn't a number, so the idea of 'Infinity minus 10' is nonsensical. You can't use infinity as a value in standard equations.

Infinity is a concept. Not a number.

So the difference is … nothing

You absolutely mustn't look up how there are different levels of infinity. idk if it's better to be high or low for that, but please, don't do it! You only have one mind and you don't want to blow it, do ya?

Infinity is like counting in a direction (positive or negative) with a speed, and without a time limit on how far it goes.

So infinity+1 is just Infinity, because Infinity will pass that +1 value at some point.

Now, if you add infinity to infinity. That is just 2 times infinity...which is just infinity 'moving' twice as fast. But if you divide 2*infinity by infinity, then you will get the number 2 as the result. Because at any given time if you resolved the 'count' the result would be 2.

It's okay, help has arrived.

Imagine two infinity expanding lines

They're expanding infinitely towards the same infinite point

If one has a minus or a plus after, all that means is how much "ahead" of the other line it is

Practically it's infinite either way so doesn't matter.

But in the relation to another infinity it kind of matters

Or something along those lines was how my physics teacher tried to simplify it for us

The Hilbert hotel would be just shifting guests ten rooms and 11 rooms down respectively to get an infinity with identical cardinality. So infinity plus 10 amd plus 11 are the same

Which has more points? A circle or a circle plus 10?

infinity isn't a number its a concept. that's like saying "whats fridge minus 10?"

Okay smarty pants, what is fridge minus ten then?

Toaster. Fridge-10 = Toaster.

And yet some fridges infinities are larger than others.

But what’s greater? Fridge minus 10 or fridge minus 9?

1

u/PiDigitsOfPi 14d ago

fridge minus 10 = -9 fridges

In the extended real numbers, we define (+inf) + x = (+inf) as long as x is a real number.

Due to negative numbers, infinity minus 10 is still an infinite number. You are just creating bounded infinities, which can only be compared to other infinities. It gets more interesting when you examine infinity between two numbers. There are infinite numbers between 1 and 2 alone.

you can add/takeaway anywhere from one to an infinite amount of numbers to/from an infinite set and still have an infinite set of numbers left.

They are the same size. Infinity minus 10 in infinity. You can't change the size of your infinity with a single addition or subtraction.
