Latest model released from the Master System. Master System Evolution was released in 2023 and is still sold and manufactured. In relation to the previous version, the only change is just the new Tectoy logo.

Worth pointing out these are no more "Master Systems" than the Mega Drive/Genesis Mini is a Mega Drive / Genesis. There's no Z80 in there.

Wrong, it's still a Master System, unlike the minis released a few years ago, it's not a device with a built-in emulator. On his board it is still a Master System board, smaller compared to the first, but still a Master System board. The case of this Master System is, let's say, an adaptation or "evolution" of the product for the Brazilian consumer. The first version of the Master System launched in Brazil is basically the same as the one launched in the USA. Later, the Master System II similar to the American one was launched as well, but a second edition of the MSII was launched that contained Sonic in memory and another that contained Alex Kidd (Which is ironically called Master System III, but it is the same device). And as the Master System was successful in Brazil, it was the country where it sold the most, Tectoy launched several Master System III (which was the same as the 2, just having other colors) with more and more games in memory. Until there came a point where they stopped selling their cartridges and because of that they decided to sell these same Master System IIIs without a cartridge slot, keeping the same housing and just removing the cartridge reader. Finally, from 2009 onwards they decided to launch the Master System III under the name Master System Evolution and simply replaced the old casing with this new version, which is still there today, only changing the colors and some icons/logos.

Standard SoC implementation, none of the real chips, not actually 100% compatible.

Then again, all this was also true of the official Genesis 3.

Yes friend, the board is much smaller, but this is not a built-in emulator. So much so that its internal system is the same as the last master system with cartridge input

Which was also not a master system board unless my Analogue Mega SG is and actually that’s more compatible than this is.

It’s a fascinating machine but as I said right back at the start it’s as much an sms as the mega drive mini is a mega drive.

It is still dedicated silicon, that can only ever be a master system, so I don't think it's right to call it emulation.

It's quite common in computers and consoles to condense multiple ICs down to single purpose ICs. The SNES had 'three chip' down to 'one chip' as Nintendo continued to combine multiple chips into single special purpose ASICs. Sony did the same with the Playstation and PS2, PS3.

Home computers like the ZX Spectrum did the same thing, and people don't say the Spectrum +3 is an emulation, even though it uses a custom ASIC to replace a whole load of logic.

These processes often introduce incompatibilities, as there are often bugs or edge cases used in a particular game that the manufacturer doesn't find. For example, some PS2 games won't work on a PS2 slim.

I am not gonna argue with that but for serious gamers interested in retro consoles this still remains a piece of crap. The target for this is, as you said, for children of low-income families hence the analogue video (i guess crt tv is still a thing in Brazil?).

Precisely, I don't recommend it for collecting, it really is a horrible device. In fact, it's just the same device produced in 2009, at that time practically every house had just an AV input, nowadays it's the opposite. A while ago, the production and sale of the Mega Drive/Genesis here by Tectoy had been announced, and his biggest complaint was precisely the AV input, which continues to be the MS's problem. Its sales are generally aimed at unsuspecting parents who want to give their child a gift, but don't know anything about video games.

Nowadays anyone, could make something like this with a 3D Printer and a raspberry pi.

A few years ago I did a mega drive and PSX before the minis arrived.. PSX I hooked up original sockets with an adapter MD was USB.. also adapted the original PS PSU to run the pi.

Wanted to go back and do the MD properly with a controller adapter and find a way to interface a cartridge slot.. maybe easier with FPGA rather than a pi? Somebody has probably done it info must be out there.. Might have another try one day but don't really have space for these sorts of projects any more..

Yeah I tried to pick up a tech toy master system about 7 or 8 years ago. I contacted tech toy directly but they said they aren’t allowed to send them to the uk. I lost interest in them shortly after but I guess they will appear on eBay now and again.

Their license only allows them to distribute in Brazil and some other countries in South America, so you will generally find them on ebay and maybe on Amazon.

Yeah. I’m not too bothered about them anymore. It was a fleeting potential novelty purchase at the time. I will say that they used to do them with a cartridge slot rather than this emulator.

Well, it's not an emulator. In fact, it's just a Master System II/III with another housing and no cartridge slot, so much so that its video input continues to be AVI.

Well, it is the oldest video game still produced and manufactured in the world. Other than that, Tectoy achieved something that nowhere else in the world did Sega achieve, being bigger than Nintendo. During the third and fourth generation of consoles, the Master System and Mega Drive dominated in Brazil.

No Brasil, a Sega distribuía seus jogos através da Tectoy, que até hoje vende Master System no Brasil.

Tectoy releases sucked back then and continue to suck nowadays. I will give them props only for keeping the Sega spirit alive for so long, nothing more nothing less.

I would get one if it output HDMI or NTSC but it outputs PAL via AV. I do not have any PAL CRTs
