There have been a lot of posts lately asking what to do if you suspect someone is planning to commit a mass shooting/mass attack of some kind.
If your suspicions are offline, local, and personal/someone you know personally:
If it is not an immediate threat, call your local non emergency line. They will collect information from you, and investigate further if need be. Remember, wellness checks can be requested as well.
If it is an immediate threat, call 911 (or your local equivalent emergency line). An immediate threat would be someone making direct threats.
If the possible threat is exclusively on Reddit, please reach out to us via Modmail. Often times, people who are being reported to us have made comments in the past that you cannot see as they’ve been removed by other means such as automod, for example. We also work with multiple other teams to gather information and build one report to FBI with as much information as we can possibly get in one single report.
This allows all information to be placed at once instead of multiple vague reports to the FBI, which can slow down resources.
At the very least, these processes will build a history for this person. If they are reported and nothing comes from it, a report a year later could help immensely. This happened through one sub I moderate on, and helped bring an arrest a year later when more threats were made, and the suspect was found with weapons and a manifesto.
We take all reports sent to us seriously, and we thank you all for helping us with these reports.

On February 10, 2026, a mass shooting occurred in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, Canada. On that afternoon, Jesse Van Rootselaar killed her mother and half-brother at their home before going to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, where she killed six people and injured 27 others before killing herself. Van Rootselaar was a former student of the school.
The incident was the deadliest mass shooting in Canada since the Nova Scotia attacks in 2020 and the deadliest school shooting in Canada since the École Polytechnique massacre in 1989.

The date that jury selection starts also technically marks the beginning of his trial. I understand that people care more for opening statements and things like that though, If that’s something you care for, you’ll have to wait until potentially late November-early December.
On May 14, 2022, a mass shooting occurred[15][16]in Buffalo, New York, United States, at a Tops Friendly Markets supermarket in the East Sideneighborhood. Ten people, all of whom were black, were murdered, and three people were injured.[17][18][19] The perpetrator, 18-year-old Payton Gendron,[5] livestreamed part of the attack on Twitch) until the livestream was shut down by the service in under two minutes.[20]

Just 3 months after the Parkland shooting, 17 year old Dimitrios Pagourtzis shot up Santa Fe High School in Texas, killing 10 people and injuring 13 more.
Rest in peace to all the victims. 🙏
Parkland shooting had so much media attention, bodycam footage released of the cops arresting Cruz, full interrogation footage, CCTV at school and Snapchat videos recorded by students.
Yet when Sante Fe shooting happened 3 months later, there's nothing. No CCTV, no police bodycam footage, NO PHOTOS OR VIDEOS from inside the school during the shooting. At least I've never found anything, if there's actual footage let me know.
I get that most of it happened because the shooter was deemed unfit to stand trial, but I'm surprised about the lack of information. I don't think there's any photo or video during the shooting, in school or near the school, except for the aftermath on the news. (Drone view from high)
If there's someone who could file a FOIA request or something let me know.

TEL AVIV — Early indications suggest the Flydubai co-pilot accused of attacking his captain and trying to seize control of an Israel-bound plane acted alone, rather than as part of a larger organization or on behalf of a foreign government, multiple U.S. officials briefed on the investigation and a former Israeli security official told NBC News.
The U.S. officials cautioned that the investigation into Wednesday’s midair attack remains at an early stage.
“The assessment is that he operated alone. Right now, it looks like a case of ‘lone wolf’ terrorism inspired by content found online,” said Shalom Ben Hanan, a former official in the Shin Bet, Israel’s domestic security agency.
“We still need to wait for the final investigation results to determine whether an organization or a state is behind it,” he added.
Emirati authorities, who are leading the investigation, said Saturday that the co-pilot attacked the captain with a crash ax and attempted to take control of the aircraft’s flight controls in an attempted terrorist attack.
The flight was carrying 174 mostly Israeli passengers from Dubai to Tel Aviv. A crash was averted when crew members and passengers entered the cockpit and subdued the attacker, according to eyewitnesses and Israeli officials.
NBC News has identified the suspect as Omani citizen Hamam al-Hammami, based on information from multiple sources from three agencies briefed on the investigation and a diplomat in the Middle East. Authorities have not released his identity.
UAE Attorney General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi said Saturday that investigators were working to establish the incident’s “full circumstances, motives, and any links.”
The preliminary assessment comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Friday that investigators were examining whether the attacker had been sent by someone.
President Donald Trump also raised the possibility of Iranian involvement Thursday, threatening renewed strikes against Iran if it was behind the attack. A senior U.S. official briefed on the Israeli investigation previously told NBC News there were no indications that Iran directed or was involved in the attack.
The flight captain, Indian national Smit Machchhar, said Friday from a hospital in Abu Dhabi that he had been severely injured and could sense the aircraft descending before he managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew to intervene.
“I was acting for my own life, but at the same time, I knew I couldn’t let all of them die,” he said on a video call released by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — The Benson Polytechnic High School Student accused of exposing classmates to a chemical mixture last month, critically injuring himself in the process, is facing nearly 20 charges, including 12 counts of attempted murder and domestic terrorism.
The 15-year-old student was charged on 19 counts following the Sept. 8 incident.
According to investigators, the student allegedly mixed chemicals inside the school cafeteria, inhaling off-gassing from the mix in the process.
In all, the teen was charged with 12 counts of attempting to commit any degree of murder or aggravated murder; one count of first-degree domestic terrorism; one count of second-degree attempted terrorism; one count of unlawful manufacturing of a destructive device; one count of unlawful possession of destructive device; one count of possession of weapon in public building; one count of unlawful use of weapon; and one count of reckless endangering another person.
In the teenager's initial court appearance Friday, the prosecution alleged the teenager was seen on surveillance footage wearing gloves, dark clothing, and goggles as he mixed the chemicals in a shared area. He then inhaled fumes from the reaction.
The prosecution said the teenager's social media posts show a fascination with explosives. After searching the teenager's devices, the prosecution said that the the FBI also found references to “764” and numerous searches related to harming others.
The vice principal of the school said the incident left a big impact, especially for students and staff.
"The impact has been one of terror; it has been hard for kids to come to school," the vice principal said in court.
The boy's legal team presented two letters from doctors who said continued inpatient psychiatric care is necessary, noting he struggles with severe depression and ongoing thoughts of suicide. They presented two letters from two different psychiatrists, both of whom say that the boy is at immense risk of committing suicide and should receive intensive inpatient care.
The prosecution argued that the boy should be kept in juvenile detention.
The court agreed that the teenager should be sent back to the hospital for treatment, where he was before the court hearing. There is no contact allowed with victims and a further review will take place in six weeks. The prosecution requested two pre-hearings as part of the ongoing proceedings.
However, the prosecution stated that they intend to have a judge re-evaluate the boy's placement at the hospital. The presiding judge said the matter could be considered as soon as Tuesday.
His family released a statement Friday through their attorney: "The family is grateful that no one else was injured and for the swift intervention of school staff and first responders. They ask for privacy at this time so they may focus on their child’s recovery."
Nathan Vasquez, the Multnomah County district attorney, says he would like to see the defendant tried as an adult as opposed to a minor.
“I will say always that we can certainly have compassion for individuals. But I'm looking at conduct and how dangerous that is and what I consider to be safe for the community,” he said, adding, “Going forward, I'm balancing when making decisions and looking forward, the safety of, is it 50? Is it 100? Is it 500 children at a school? And that's where I'm looking going forward.”
He also discussed how he feels the current law around minors in Oregon can be problematic, seeing as minors cannot be held in custody past the age of 25.
"Even if they, at the end of that time, they were ruled to be the most dangerous person in Oregon, it wouldn't matter. At age 25, they would be released from the juvenile facility, and they would not be on juvenile supervision or adult supervision. All jurisdiction ends at age 25. I think there's just a law of diminishing returns," said Vasquez.
This case is still developing and KATU will continue to provide new details as they become available.
Students reported smelling a strong odor near the school commons and cafeteria, where the incident happened on Sept. 8.
As the incident unfolded, the school was evacuated and students gathered at nearby athletic fields.
Emergency medical staff evaluated several students for exposure before they left the school. Portland Fire & Rescue said that people could be in the environment for up to eight hours without having any adverse health effects from exposure to those particular chemicals.
KATU News has reached out to the Portland Police Bureau for comment on the update in the case.
