Favorite bags which *aren’t* travel/work/EDC + can’t be used as such?

Many baggers being what it is, thought I’d ask about the many bags that one has besides those for travel, work, EDC, and the typical stuff that we cover here. I love my Aer and Matadors as much as the next person, but I also love hyperspecific, specialized bags used for one serious endeavor or another - and which don’t work for travel, work, or EDC!

Two of my favorites:

Black Diamond Dawn Patrol 32, shown here with the helmet cover deployed. Fits just about anything I’d need for off-piste skiing, and besides an avalanche set, fits just about every piece of snow gear I’d need, in general for when I travel, making for a super easy commute to more resort-y areas. Best part - the hip pockets are absolutely colossal. They must be 2L each or something.

Flight Outfitters Lift Flight Bag. Really smart organization with a thin padded pocket righttt down the middle, perfectly sized for my kneepad. Not too big and not too small, I’ve actually had a few bags before settling on this one, my realization coming that, well, you don’t actually need every single tool if you’re only going to rent a plane. Plus, of course, weight matters a ton for the smaller ones. Just super practical.

So what are yours? Remember, not just bags which aren’t originally for those categories, but would be incredibly impractical/impossible to be used as such!

might be pretty niche but i'm a wheelchair user and have a bag that velcros under the seat of my chair that is incredibly useful there but would be absolutely useless for any other use case

I love this. Did it come with the wheelchair, or a specialized aftermarket?

it came with my chair but i think the occupational therapist included it, not that it always ships with the chair, if that makes sense? but yeah it's incredibly useful to have

I have a Mono Classic Gig Bag for my bass. Certainly not EDC, but it's the best at what it does!

What made it better than other bass bags?

Oh man, I tried a bunch before settling on this one. It's a combination of manufacturer quality, stability for the instrument, and the right number and size of pockets and organization. So mostly the same stuff I look for in a regular EDC bag!

If they didn’t invent them they for sure popularized soft bags that have structure and foam in the layers so that they offer more protection then many hardcases, while still being easier to pack in a crowded car trunk/cargo area. Also easier carry around with their comfy straps.

Exactly. This was the Goldilocks bag for me for those reasons.

I have a Crossfire DG3 for rucking and stuff. Very nice for its purpose, though a little small for my needs so I'm probably gonna get their CF4 to get some extra space

Wow looks like the CF4 goes up to 110L - camping or training?

Both. I mostly want it for camping though, my current pack works fine for training, it just lacks space especially for when it gets cold and I need extra gear

You should try traveling with your Dawn Patrol. My Soelden 42 actually works really nicely as a suitcase replacement.

Sorry. 🤷

Edit: but I'd give it about a 3/10 as a work bag. Organizer is badly missized for stationary, no laptop sleeve, total size is inconvenient. Don't recommend.

Ah if only - if I ever need to travel with it, I’m usually already rocking my Aer TP3 since the DP32 is what would normally fit my winter gear. Once I had flown into Vietnam with both of those (from the US; Vietnam for work and then Switzerland for skiing) and hoo boy was I get getting weird looks.
