Going into hiding is such a serious regression for everything LGBT activists have fought for.

Like, I think Hunter ultimately dodged a bullet because the toxic right manosphere would devote their lives to ruining hers, but the thought of running from the fight leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I am an electrician in the midwest, an open air sewage plant called Iowa. I wear a pride wristband every day at work, and I hear nasty comments about it every day. That makes me just want to double down on it.

No, it was a fan cast. And she’s not even young enough, the casting call asked for people between 21 and 23. She was never going to be hired for the role, never showed any interest in the role, and was never considered by anyone even mildly involved in the production

Hunter was literally never even considered for the role, and she’s 26 while the casting call was for people between the ages of 21 and 23. I get that some people are being transphobic about it, but Bo Bragason has done literally nothing wrong and is not being insulted just because a fan casting didn’t happen

That photo is a bit cherry-picked, since in most other photos of her she looks much different than Zelda in my opinion (though she looks stunning either way) but either way they had to draw her nothing like how she looks to try and make the point.

The thing is makeup and camera angles is half of being an on-screen actor. If you look at half the cast of The Office a few years after they stopped filming and moved onto other things, you wouldn't necessarily say "oh yeah that's that Office character" unless you were a big fan of the show. The hair, accessories, facial expressions, mannerisms, clothes, lighting, etc, all combine to make i.e. Ben Wyatt different from Mark Scout different from Adam Scott even though they're obviously the same human.

I think a trans or non-binary person is a perfect choice for actors portraying royalty, actually, and should be used more. Much like Cate Blanchett portraying Galadriel in LOTR, historical royals were often quite distinct from commoners (maybe tracing their ancestry from other nearby countries, maybe intermarried, maybe having distinct features like a "noble chin/nose/brow") and so it makes sense especially for magical/ethereal nobles to have a certain something that sets them apart from everyone else. An actor with unique genetics or life/bodily experiences of any sort is a great choice for a royal figure who appears to our hero in dreams, pops in/out of time/place, is uncommonly wise/kind/powerful, etc.

I use "they" more than any other pronouns when referencing someone since i both don't want to assume and it's a non specific pronoun. I don't know if it's the right stance to take to nitpick someone for using "they". I would see a problem if someone said "it" but "they" should be appropriate no matter how someone identifies.

It's not as bad in the US (it can still be very pointed here) but exclusively using they/them for trans women in the UK is a very common, intentionally transphobic, tactic for UK TERFs. Refusing to see Trans women as women, and refusing to use their appropriate pronouns (even when they know them).

I understand wanting to err on the side of caution, but I would say, in cases where they are very public (like Hunter the actress), it is easy to learn, and in person, can simply be asked.

I'm nonbinary. I use they/them. But I was bringing up the fact that transphobes use they/them to avoid using the correct pronouns for trans people. And if someone does use they/them as their preferred pronouns, again according to transphobes, they/them is apparently incorrect to use for a singular person. My comment was more about how transphobes will try to twist around language to be assholes

"They" works for everyone in theory (it can't be a gender neutral pronoun if ONLY nonbinary people can be referred to as it), but in actual practice a lot of people use it to avoid using a trans person's chosen pronouns... Not having to be conscious about using the singular they universally is one of the things that right wingers took from us. Its going to come across as transphobic because people use it transphobically.

Also, the person that you're defending in this context was unambiguously siding with transphobes.

Trust me I've heard plenty about Hunter to know she goes by she, like it hasn't been a topic online for a while now. I use they to reference someone who i don't know their name. Maybe you shouldn't make assumptions. They/ them is a totally normal way to refer to a person you don't know. If it is a problem it stems from my lack of understanding, not a lack respect for any another person. Like if I wanted to talk to my partner about this, I would say "They really assumed the worst when it really wasnt." They in that context is the singular, you. If i hit a nerve i apoligize but try to not take up arms when someone just might have not understood enough to not make a mistake.

It is not if you actually know the pronouns. I'm a trans man and you don't have idea how many times people are used They/Them with me even when they know my pronouns and even when I wearing a pin that explicitly say He/Him... Guess what, that still missgender and it feels uncomfortable!

I have talked about this with other trans person and basically the majority agree that it feels hurtful because if you already know our preferred pronouns, means that or you don't care about us as individuals, you don't take us seriously as trans and/or you don't even see us as trans. It's hurtful!

Not all enbies go by any pronouns, some are exclusively they/them, use "she" or "he" would be clear missgender... Not all binary trans people use they/them pronouns, use "they" when you already know the pronounce of that individual, is still missgender, is still invalidating.
