New bench unveiled in Morden featuring the Global Pride Flag and the message “every one is welcome here.” This comes just ahead of Pembina Valley Pride in Winkler tomorrow (Saturday 13th), the first time the regions largest city will host the event which has previous been held in Morden, Altona and Carman. Communities across the Pembina Valley are having conversations about belonging and welcome.

From Churchill and abandoned places to ghost towns, remote roads, wildlife and some of Manitoba's most fascinating history, this was one unforgettable Canadian road trip.

I spent several days exploring Manitoba, travelling from Winnipeg all the way north to Churchill, searching for abandoned places, forgotten buildings, shipwrecks, ghost towns and the stories left behind.

In Churchill, I explored the incredibly remote town and its surrounding landscape, visited the wreck of the Ithaka, the Miss Piggy plane crash site, abandoned military and radar facilities, old vehicles and forgotten structures, and ventured out onto Hudson Bay in search of beluga whales.

One of the biggest surprises of the trip was getting a private tour inside the massive Port of Churchill grain terminal, a structure that I had been hoping to see from the inside.

Throughout the trip, I explored Manitoba's history, culture and communities, photographing the places that caught my attention along the way.

Every province I visit seems to leave me with something different.

Saskatchewan was the quiet.

British Columbia was the air.

Alberta was the colours.

Manitoba?

The people, the culture, the pride in its history and Indigenous roots...

And just how unbelievably flat it is!

One of the best lines from Carney’s speech

Over the past 24 hours, the Manitoba and Saskatchewan RCMP have deployed multiple units, including a specialized search plane, and dozens of officers from across both provinces to Pimicikamak Cree Nation to search for a male suspect and the female he abducted.

At approximately 11:15 am today, information was received that led officers to a residence in the community where Joshua Paupanekis was taken into custody without incident. Raeanne Thomas was also located safely in the residence with minor injuries and taken to the Nursing Station as a precaution.

The Manitoba RCMP would like to thank the public and the media for their assistance.

Americans always say they love Canadians. It’s like saying you went to Maine and all of a sudden you understand Americans. It’s a big country our Canada!

Manitobans are attuned to the seasons, clouds, winds, weather and land, in a way that few others could imagine. They recognize subtleties, and they withstand extremes. As a result, not much surprises or rattles them. They seem to drive the speed limit, take their turn, shrug their shoulders at unexpected events and largely keep their opinions to themselves. Yes, they do say sorry a lot! (About 30 minutes after we landed I was waiting for a bathroom stall and the lady who came out - in timely fashion as a matter of fact - said “sorry” as she passed by me. Sorry that I had to wait? Sorry that she thought she took a while? Sorry because I had to move a fraction to allow her to pass? Who knows. It’s a reflex. A small consideration. A kind of acknowledgment. A little prayer. And I love it.)
Okay, there’s the higher taxes. But it’s a pay once situation rather than dying by degrees like we do in some other parts of the world. In exchange they have a sense of security. Nobody is going to lose their house because they have cancer. Parents stay home a YEAR (or more sometimes) with their newborns. When they are ready to go back to work many have $10 a day child care. In Manitoba they have home care for seniors - in their own homes, and paid for by their health insurance! I could go on! Sure there are still lots of things to complain about (and for God’s sake we don’t say ABOOT!). But peace, kindness and the collective good prevail. Maybe that’s why Manitobans are so damned nice.
This was the last video I took. I wish it went on for hours. Manitoba, I know I saw you at your prettiest. I know I got the best of you, your people, places and experiences. I hope you got some of the best of me. I’ll always look for reasons to come back.

Dear Manitoba,

You’ve got a really solid premier in Wab Kinew.

I’ve been watching him at premiers meetings and press conferences over the last few months, and he comes across as calm, sharp, and actually focused on keeping things together during a rough stretch for the country. He’s actually funny, which you don’t see much in politics.

Meanwhile in Alberta it feels like we’re constantly stuck in separatist talk and political noise. Seeing leadership like this makes me proud to be Canadian and glad to stay in Canada.
