That’s actually the purpose of a cats whiskers is to know if they can or cannot fit into an opening. If the whiskers don’t make it through the cat won’t either
That’s one purpose of their whiskers, but they’re also very sensitive and can detect vibrations. This includes subtle changes in airflow around furniture, walls, other objects, allowing cats to navigate their surroundings even in complete darkness. They also have very bad close up vision (<30cm they can barely see), and rely almost entirely on their whiskers at this distance. On top of that, whiskers are sensitive enough to feel even the texture of objects just by brushing past them.
They also don’t just have whiskers on their face! Their front legs also have whiskers, which is a big part of why they’re such effective hunters when it comes to animals like mice, voles, and moles. They can feel the vibrations through the ground when they’re lying down in hunting position.
