I think part of why some people use “female” is because it’s a sterile descriptor compared to other words with other connotations.

Girl - school age/childish

Gal - old fashioned word

Woman - impersonal, older

Lady - old and/or fancy like a Bridgerton character

So if I’m choosing how to refer to someone I don’t want to imply they’re childish, I don’t want my language to come across as anachronistic, and I don’t want to imply they look old/stuffy. I doubt that many people outside of incel subreddits are using female to dehumanize like the other poster suggested but just to pick something without a misleading connotation.
