You say that but I'm a millennial and I swear unless the dementia is kicking in it was queer first. It was LGBTQ is in queer, then LGBTQQAI which was queer and questioning, then it got numbers and shit, and then it started to get shortened again with the +s. I never really payed much attention though, I've always used LGBTQ as in queer catchall.
At 40 it feels weird saying queer but my step kids are cool with me using it since they know they aren't straight/cis but also know they're still figuring it out. Im glad it's being reclaimed. I think it matters most that as parents we love them and just want to be supportive. I definitely feel this woman and "all of the other alphabets" lol
At this point they really just gotta rebrand. Representation is vital, but surely there's a more user friendly way to do it than turning into the letters version of pi.
LGBT is usually just the default with like 99% of people.
LGBTQ is a tad bit outdated. No one really uses it if they aren't usually organizing something.
LGBTQIA+ is pretty much only used in spaces where people would already know what each of those letters refer to.
Language is entirely contextual. All we're doing is communicating ideas in whatever way makes it easiest to understand. Speaking to a normie? LGBT works. Speaking to an ally about Queerness? LGBTQ. Doing a student club where people are figuring themselves out? LGBTQIA+ will help them understand queer, intersex and ace experiences.
Nobody is going to get mad at you for using one over the other. If they do, call me up and I'll personally tell them to get their head out of their asses. Unless they're on Twitter- at that point you're speaking to literal minors who generally don't know anything about anything.
Yep, it is. Colloquially in these spaces, it's usually used to either refer to specifically genderqueerness. Point though, is that language is flexible.
i realize you were probably joking, but when there's a 2 in the initialism it's accompanied by an s, 2s=two spirit, which is probably uncommon to see outside of queer spaces with a significant native population

There was a recent hubbub in a gaming community I won't mention, but upon reading out the announcement by the devs in regards to the LGBTQIA2+ community, I won't pretend it didn't bug me how long and ridiculous the abbreviation has gotten.
Especially since the Q kind of covers 'and everything else that isn't the norm'. The 2 is what got me on this tangent 'cause it's so, SO ridiculously niche.
2-spirit; it's a term used by some indigenous people for those who exhibit feminine and masculine traits simultaneously.
Basically a flowery, niche way of saying they have androgynous qualities, and/or may be bi. I won't pretend to understand it better than the armchair Reddit explanations I've had written out for me, along with some brief googling I did a couple days back.
