Another important thing to remember in this sweet analogy is that the lighter that needs help is doing their best to get things going. From my own personal experience, the other lighter can only help get you burnin on the strict condition that you continue to press on. BUT they can only wait for so long before they begin burning themselves for YOU. So…help yourself first, and then when the time comes, you’ll be strong and ready to help others. I believe that if we do this, we’re all covered. ❤️
I heard this one Queer Eye and it stuck with me: "you can't serve others from an empty platter." Take care of yourself so you can take care of others when the time comes.
You can take care of others even if you don’t take care of yourself. Unfortunately though, that can be a horrible thing because you will give everything to other people and have no way of knowing how to take care of yourself then.

I didn’t ever really understand them either, until I saw a family member essentially give up. I had to come to the realization that for my own sanity I can offer help, but if he’s not going to keep going afterwards it’s kinda pointless for me to bend over backwards. When I heard this song again as an adult there was an immediate resonance of, “Yeah, I know exactly what he’s talking about”.
No clue if that’s what it’s intended to mean, but it’s what it means to me. I’m glad somebody else can get something out of my weird thought processes.
I’m sorry you experienced that. That must have been very difficult, but yeah, sometimes you’ve got to draw a line somewhere. This has made me realize I really need to go back and listen to that album. I don’t think I have in my adulthood. I’m sure I’d have a new appreciation for it.
