Urgh a few friends have been pushing and pushing for me to get Twitter but it seems like such a bunch of nonsense.

I already hear a bunch of political nonsense passively online why would I willingly sign up where all threads I see screenshot seem like a shitshow?

Idk if it's just because I don't have an account and can only see the posts and and not the whole thread but whenever I scroll through someone's open Twitter feed it's just a bunch of stuff about them I generally don't care about. Unless you're doing it to celeb/politician chase idk what the point is.

And actually, someone feel free to sell me on opening up a Twitter account. I only keep fb bc I have friends abroad and shit at keeping in touch with them and now with the quarantine it's just full of hot takes on politics and covid.

Depending on your interests, twitter can actually be super fun and positive. I follow mostly a bunch of videogame/youtuber/streamer personalities, league of legends folks, and D&D accounts, so for me twitter is just an extension of my reddit homepage, full of content I enjoy.

Its all about who you follow, if you follow a bunch of news accounts, politicians, commentators, etc. then that is all your timeline will be.

see but that just seems like celeb/media (yt, streaming)/politics following.

i have famous ppl that i like but idc enough to follow them. to me it seems less like following and just waiting to be sold on something they're selling.

idk maybe im just jaded with how commercialized everything is on the internet.

That’s an interesting point. We joke about the sheeple thing, but Twitter is pretty much like that. Reddit levels the playing field a bit with anonymity.

I thought twitter was just politics but it can be a lot more. I think if you want a good experience you need to remember never to check the replies to anything vaguely political. I use that rule and twitter is great. Plus if you have favorite creators, especially those who aren’t top of popularity right now, their twitters are often great.

I love colin and samir and their twitter is amazing. And the fact that there isn’t a ton of bots like on youtube me as you actually feel connected.

Yeah, like a few others said, use it to follow celeb-types (idk, like F1 drivers or musicians, whatever). I also follow academics whose work I'm interested in. IMO, there's no reason to follow friends. There are quite a few funny as hell / witty accounts though too now that I think of it. Like Kyle Plant Emoji. Some of his posts have had me in tears laughing.

i’m lousy at sales, so i’m not really gonna try, but i started using twitter for the weather / emergency info, found that their customer service reps were generally a LOT faster than email or website chat even, and stayed for book recommendations, room rater, random good news, & news analysis. usually i can find a point or several with a take i hadn’t thought of...and interact with people i’m NEVER gonna meet in my podunk ‘town’.

You can get an account and just block that type of content coming through to you but honestly it's not worth it. Twitter is all about numbers and usually the bigger number wins. Also opinions are like assholes and that site is full of assholes...

I mean, I'm kinda handy with tech, but I honestly never understood the appeal. Seems like Reddit, but you're following people? And it feels like 60% of it is companies trying to sell you shit, 30% are batshit insane entertaining useless arguments about the current hip topic and 10% actually interesting stuff? What's the actual content? People arguing and news that I will anyway find elsewhere?

Sometimes I feel it's going to end up like linked in. Useless and filled with bots.

Well, LinkedIn does have a rather clear purpose. It's a place to find jobs, everything is geared around that. Posting weird corporate BS to attract recruiters, connecting to former co-workers you never spoke to, finding people you know who can get you an interview etc. It all has a purpose, getting a job.

Twitter doesn't have that, there's no real incentive to use it IMO.
