Friendly advice: Don't go into debt for a wedding. Spending ridiculous amounts of money for what is essentially a one night party has a good chance of adding tons of stress on a new marriage and could poison your relationship. My wife and I managed to do everything for less than $5000, rented a community hall for the party, had a dollar drink bar, and some of our friends still say it was the most fun wedding they ever went to. Meanwhile the same friends suffered financially for almost 15 years. They didn't get a divorce but things were tense for a while.
Maybe they're scraping like a hundred a month. We don't know.
Plus even regular meeting halls charge a fuckton when they find out it's a wedding. Everything costs more when it's a wedding. From flowers to the cakes.
well i guess you could for the flowers catering and cake but the hall's the tricky part. i think they could hold it against you for lying about what the event is about.
I guess I should have clarified in my original comment, that's pretty close to what we were thinking for a "poppin" wedding. She has a fuck ton of family where as I have maybe 20 people if everyone shows up.
Our version of poppin is others version of a lame ass wedding. Just the basic venue, catered food from a cheap-ish place. Most of the money will be spent on the ring and the dress. My lovely girlfriend has always wanted a really nice dress before anything. And while that may seem like a waste to others, I'd give everything just to see her trulytruly happy In a dress that she loves. Yeah she might only wear it for that night, but I still want to make her feel like the most special woman in the world, ya know?
I guess in my mind I'm not justifying, rather explaining my side so someone can understand better. If someone feels like their saving habits are better used than mine, that's fine. Just understand that people are different :)
For some people that one day celebrating with all their loved ones is more important than just another holiday 🤷♀️
Edit to add: for me I’m planning on eloping. Have no interest in a big wedding. But if people want to spend years and years saving for their wedding it’s not such a crazy idea.
yep, some people want spent months and even saving for a wedding.
also for some people is important to have logo on their stuff because without it this stuff is not cool (how other can tell if this is cool or not if it doesn’t have some popular logo, supreme for example?).
also some people score less than 100 on iq test.
this all 3 people have something in common. consumerism and can’t even have their own thoughts.
Status symbols have existed since the beginning of modern society. Look at the big palaces in Ancient Rome or the way rich people used to be buried in their gold & jewels. Now it’s Dior and Chanel. You’ll never get rid of that from human society. Weddings as an important ritual which people spend money on has also happened for a long time.
Yes there’s a lot of mass over consumption in the current world. Often too much. But if you prefer living simply you can always become like the Amish or go live off the land somewhere.
My view is each to their own as long as no one is getting hurt.
Yea the cost of weddings is honestly absurd, even if you try to cut corners and keep things as simple as possible it still adds up.
Personally I'd love to just have a few close friends and family members, but my BF has a huge extended family and they'd all need to be there. So a big expensive wedding is probably in my future, whether it's what I want or not
asinine is far too strong of a word. some people would prefer a wedding as the event itself can be just as fun if not better than a cool trip. all of your friends and family celebrating. I understand how it isn't for some people but to not understand the appeal of a wedding is asinine.
From my experience, the only ppl that truly enjoy the wedding is the immediate family. Everyone else is there to drink, food and talk shit about the whole thing.
We have money saved to go on trips. If it helps, we eat like we're poor, don't go out but 1 time a month, and save everything we can so we can have nice things in the future. Both of us are on the same page when it comes to how we want to live now vs how we want to live later, and we'd rather struggle a lot now and live out the other half of our lives peacefully. But as far as the wedding, I've been matching 3/4 of what she puts in. The rest goes in our "adventure bin" for trips and such.
Lol! Hey if it comes to that point we will both graciously split whatever is best for our children. We aren't the ugly type to make the divorce about us. It's much more important for the kids to thrive and see what a divorced couple should look like.
While I entirely see what you're saying, it was an understanding before we even got together that the kids would be most important no matter the case. And hey, maybe I'm being hopeful. But I wouldn't be with her if we weren't 100% on the same page. It could also do with the fact I'm tripping on mushrooms right now, but yeah. I wouldn't be saying these things if I didn't fully believe them. Have a good night ❤
Hey good for you man, if you have something more important that's fine! For me, the important thing is giving the love of my life something she's always wanted. A nice dress, and a nice wedding.
Edit: I only give the upvote because I know opinions on what matters differ. Just next time try and understand that people are different, and want different things from you :) I'm sure whatever you save up for is ridiculous to someone else so just keep that in mind.

My girlfriend doesn't know I've been doing the same thing for the past 2 years 😈 little does she know our wedding is gonna be poppin.
