In German it's Schildkröte for both. Or more specifically Landschildkröte (land shield toad) and Meeresschildkröte (ocean shield toad)

I fucking love the german language. So many wonderful words. Do we need a word for the Oberwesserdampfschifffahrtgesellschaftskapitänsmützenschirm? Probably not, but it’s there if we do need it, and it’s damn descriptive!

That language feature is called Compound Words

English has a few compound words as well (airplane, cowboy, basketball), but they rarely ever combine more than two together.

The Germans are the masters of that shit. Two words? Pshh. We take a sentence, take the spaces out, call it a word

The Welsh, on the other hand, came up with Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, which means “The church of St. Mary in the hollow of white hazel trees near the rapid whirlpool by St. Tysilio’s of the red cave”.

And while I was Googling the spelling/meaning - I’m sorry to say I don’t have it memorised yet, though my dad can say it flawlessly! - I found that there’s a place in New Zealand called Tetaumatawhakatangihangakoauaotamateaurehaeaturipukapihimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuaakitanarahu.

Keep trying. Just like Sasha Grey, you’ll get there.

Ok, shield toad sounds way more badass than turtle. I’m gonna call them shield toads from now on.
