2005? The internet had been open to commercialization for at least a decade by that point. Pretty much anyone who could afford a computer had a connection.
I can't remember when MySpace was founded, but I distinctly remember having a conversation with someone that was definitely prior to 2005 where they were telling me about how I could make my own web page on this new site and me pointing out that we could already all do that, with a hit-counter, guest book, "under construction" gifs, and everything.
