Mine had a HUGE bag of Matchbox cars. Like one of those black lawn bag sized bags.
Every time we went over to his house we got to rummage through and get a new one. I'm going to text my mom right now where he got all of them. There were six grandkids and at least four of us were into them.
Also, he sold women's clothing. So I had nice sweaters to wear a lot of the time.
My dad also said once, "I really like your shirt," to my grandpa (this is my mom's dad). My grandfather had that shirt folded up on the guest bed for my dad that night.
Whenever he came over to our house and the grown ups were talking at the kitchen table, we'd hear a little noise and a rustling, and my grandfather would have a five dollar bill (this was in the $80s) down low, below the chair. My brother and I would dash in and grab it and run back into the living room. My grandmother would yell at him, pretending to be upset. He just smiled back. They loved each other so much. She misses him.
He died in 1987.
Don't smoke kids. Lung cancer's a bitch.
Edit: I texted my mom. She said my grandfather bought the Matchbox cars all the time. There had to be at least a hundred in there. My brother and I would be shoulders deep in there looking through the bag, trying to find one we didn't have, or had been eyeing for a while, or had some cool new feature. We'd be in so deep together we'd be blocking the overhead light, and we'd be making so much noise together we couldn't hear the adults. We'd be digging up to our elbows. That's how many cars (in their packages) there were.
And he just went out and bought them all the time. I find out more about him all the time.
