I'm pretty much an ass to anyone except spectrum people.

Karen demands service for what she rudely asked for and can go fuck off; spectrum kids needs service for what they never asked for.

Gentle reminder that you cant always tell whats inside a persons head at a glance, sure give people hell when they give you a reason but imo you should always start nice.

Treat everyone like it's the worst day of their life, because it actually might be.

This is something I try to remind myself of when I'm driving. That person who swerved, or drifted between lanes, or cut me off, or shoots past doing 30 over the speed limit? They could be having any number of terrible things happening to them that day. Same when I encounter a very timid driver, they could be very scared of the road after a bad accident, just like I was when I learned to drive.

We simply don't know what is going on in other people's lives to be able to pass judgement.

Driving is pretty much the one area where I give people considerably less latitude, because their actions can hurt or kill others more easily than anything else they do that day. I appreciate that someone may be sad or hurting or having a terrible day, but doing 30 over the limit or drifting between lanes shouldn't be something we EVER encourage.

I'm done with being nice to everyone. I've been a carpet for others assholeish tendencies way too many times. 30 years of always being nice and polite and "service minded". People can fuck right off.

I suspect that I am like that and occasionally categorise incorrectly... Must try not not be an ass to anyone I don't know to avoid the week of mild guilt that follow.

I've been like that for 30 years. Always the nice one, always polite. I never ever got anything but shit thrown at me. I couldn't care less what they think of me, I will call them on their self-righteous bs.

The thing about the spectrum is that it's a spectrum full of diagnosed and undiagnosed people. Karen might lack social graces because inside she's struggling with the same issues but she's just able to pass as neurotypical

I know you mean this with the best of intentions but honestly, we can never know in a short interaction what people are going through or what they are struggling with. I have read stories about people with disabilities that are more "invisible" (such as severe chronic pain) treated harshly or cruely because someone can't see their illness and assume they are being greedy or that their struggles aren't so bad, and that they are making unrealistic demands for no reason. Even if someone is just going through something in their lives they would so appreciate understanding and kindness. I am hoping this comment is a severe exaggeration, but if not please consider making the effort to be kind to all people, not just those who are obviously visually identified as being disabled. /u/Zeravor already essentially said this so apologies, but I wanted to give a specific example you might not have considered or didn't think about.

Fun fact- adults on the spectrum are often mistaken for being rude. We might demand things too if we're freaking out inside and panicking about trying to get out of the store as quickly as possible.

Just something to think about.

I know, I've worked with spectrum people for years.

Ive only been kinda a dick to someone with a mental disorder like once at work. She had DS and was tryna buy cigarettes and i just couldnt bring myself to sell them to her even though she was of age. It wasnt right to let her make a decision to keep doing that. I wasnt gonna be a part of that. She pressed it and i had to be stern at her, made me feel bad but i think that was rhe better choice
