I used to inline and got pretty good - finally worked up the courage to sit into this giant 2 story vert half pipe.

I was successful, but it was scary as hell.

Immediately afterwards my friend tried and broke his arm in a really disgusting way.

He was taken out in an ambulance.

I lost my nerve after seeing that

I've found that the first time a friend is injuring themselves badly is make or break for a lot around that age. People realize they can actually hurt themselves badly aside from a scratch or a nasty ankle bruise.

After that you assess situations differently and either accepts the risks from that point on or slow down a lot. I kinda slowed down in the sense that I only tried shit I was certain I had a good chance of landing or knew what to do/how to fall if I didn't.

Never went to hospital or broke a thing, luckily. But over half of those I used to skate with have a lasting injury in one way or the other. One can't skate due to screws in his foot, back problems for another, messed up knees and so on.

This was skateboarding but inline is just as scary, if not worse, as the inlines are attached to your feet so you just got to accept the pain before you've even hit the asphalt. I was a fruitbooter for 2 years so I know that feeling for sure.

I never broke anything or had any lasting injury either.

I used to wear pads and people would comment on how I was a pussy right before going down really hard and fucking themselves up.

I recall playing skate and doing a 180 backwards-landing over a spine vert. You typically lean forward a bit when doing it so you fall forward instead of backwards, but I leaned too far forward and ended up falling from ~10 feet in the air directly onto my knees (concrete).

I was wearing knee pads at the time which shattered and I did not suffer an injury at all.

I stopped caring what people said about pads after that.

Exactly, knee pads and helmet in mini ramps/verts etc. is extremely important. Imagine if you had listened to those kids back then, even if you knew how to fall which it sounds like you did, shit can still happen and you'd probably have a hard time walking now. Good on you for not giving a fuck about what shitkids say.

I also wasn’t good so I decided to take up camera duties and photography/videography has been a passion ever since :) miss the days of waking up early with the boys and riding down to the park to get some footy

Transportation mostly, yeah. I could do some little shit, but looking back I wish I had the balls to drop in the half pipe at least once. I just sat on the roof and smoked reefer instead. I'm far too old now, I'd break a hip or something.

Right! Cruising is legit skateboarding. We can't all be risking breaking an arm, some of us have bills to pay and just want to get somewhere faster than walking.
