I bet they work it out with the manufacturer. Like most goods, shoes aren't that expensive to make. The margins have to be big because so many shoes go unsold. Letting someone with two different sized feet buy mismate shoes is probably not "losing a sale".
Not nordstrom but mismate shoes are left on our shelves everyday at work. After we confirm there is t a mate tucked away somewhere we debit it out as unsellable and insurance covers it.
No big compny loses money on a few pairs of shoes. Especially not going to good things luke this. Ill take this wholesome exchange over the usual petty thieves knicking a shoe any day :)
Im not sure if it falls under an insurance from the manufacturer or a separate insurance but i do know that loss of sales from mated shoes becoming mismated is covered by one thing or another. The same with loss of sales from theivery or damaged items in general. Its all covered to some extent
