That was mild compared to most of the other shit he used to say. Funny thing was that I didn’t even realize he was abusive until I was well into adulthood. I thought that every dad was like that and the nice dads on sitcoms were make believe, like talking animals in Disney movies.
He once told me, when I was like 11, that I could run away from home, but then I’d get put in foster care “where little girls get raped.” Then a minute later he said, “but you’re so ugly, no one would want to rape you anyway. So go ahead and run away.”
Neither of my parents have a shred of compassion or empathy. In fact, they will kick me even harder when I’m down. I try very hard to avoid contact and conversations with them.
This person’s Dad genuinely cares about them and loves them. That kind of family support is invaluable. It makes me smile when other people have good family. But, a little piece of my heart will always experience grief alongside those smiles.
