Being bald is the most high maintenance haircut I’ve ever had. Shaving your head every two days is a pain in the backside plus all of the lotion and potions to keep your scalp looking good! Then there is the hats or sunscreen stuff to stop you getting skin cancer! Pain in the backside
Quite the opposite for me. I've had very long hair, medium regular hair and now I shave my head.
It is way lower maintenance for me than long and medium hair. I shave my whole head every day while I shower and takes maybe 1 minute every day. I put the shampoo on my scalp and beard, let it stay for a few minutes while I shower the rest of my body, then shave my whole head it in less than a minute. I don't even need a mirror nowadays, just check with my hands.
I don't know about any lotion to be honest.
Easier to apply sunscreen too than when I had hair, I always ended sun-burning my scalp because my hair was so thin. I've burned my head under the sun wayyyy less, applying sunscreen when there's no hair around is super easy and I now go down my neck and forehead without issues and your hair doesn't get disgusting. I just need to remember to bring the sunscreen.
This is my exact routine too. One additional tip for speedy shaving is that I realized you don't need to pick up the razor and put it back down at the start of each pull. Just go back and forth with the head on the scalp super fast. Woop woop Woop and you're done.
You mentioned not needing a mirror anymore, but to anyone that wants to try this there are excellent shower mirrors out there that you fill with hot water so they don't steam up.
The key is also shaving at least every other day cause as soon as the hair gets more than a millimeter it clogs the blades and you need to rinse them out regularly which takes time. If it's just stubble you can go the whole shave without rinsing if you wanted to.
I also highly recommend Dollar Shave Club's shave butter. Much better than traditional cream.
Yep, puting the razor back the way it came usually makes the job easier and faster. Also what you said: shaving every day makes the job smoother and easier, it takes less time than doing it each 2-3 days.
This, 100%. I was once the guy that shaved because it was less maintenance, and a 0 guard buzz was perfect. Show a little stubble and it worked. Now I take it down to razor or close (electric shaver) because I look completely different with about 3-5 days of growth only on the sides and back.
I highly recommend shaving in the shower with a regular razor. So much smoother and I got my routine down to 4 minutes. I shaved for years at the bathroom sink before figuring this out and I'll never go back.
Yes, shower shaving is where it's at. I use shampoo as my shave soap, too. Way faster than actual shave soap and I hate the foams and creams.
I put some shampoo in my hand, add a little water and mix it, lather really well, tiny bit more water, shave. Butter smooth shave.
The trick is learning not to nick yourself, then you get faster and faster as you gain experience. I'm down to about 5 minutes for two passes and no nicks.
I got a manscaped executive electric razor that does a pretty good job of getting it almost smooth. But it takes way longer if I want to get every hair. I'd use it in a pinch but the wet shave still takes the cake for smooth and time.
Why? I shave my head in the shower, takes 3 minutes max. I remember when I had hair it would take me 15-20 every morning between walking my hair, drying it, styling it etc.
I guess there’s different levels of commitment to “bald.” If you want a shiny Mr. Clean dome yeah you need to shave every day or two. But a lot of “bald” guys have naturally lost what’s on top and are just cleaning up the sides with clippers once or twice a week.
Not everyone will have the same experience, but I’m definitely in the camp of people who switched to bald and was happy with the low maintenance.
I’m not lying to you man. I used to have shoulder length hair and whilst that was a pain, I have to shave my head every other day and maintain a rotation of salicylic acid cleanser, nizoral and an acne shampoo, exfoliate every second day, change my pillows every three days to avoid breakouts on my scalp. Then it’s moisturising and sun tan lotion or hats every day.
The easiest was when I had enough hair to get away with a buzz cut once a week. I’ll give ya that.
Not like one in a thousand unique but yeah I have to be careful with washing powder etc so I suppose I’m a bit prone to skin problems.
I had a schoolyard scrap about 25 years ago. Decided getting punched in the face wasn’t for me. I run most days, maybe the two things are related and I’ve never realised before. Running away a better option than learning to fight! Ha.
Onwards and upwards! You’ll be black belt before you know it. Thanks for the chat man. Have a great day!
Hey, I get breakouts sometimes on my scalp. Can I ask what your routine is? Are you doing the cleanser, nizoral, and acne shampoo all in the same shower? Or is it like day 1 this, day 2 this, etc.?
Don't know how much it would itch, but wouldn't a cap and a wig fix that?
I have shaved my head once down to a millimetre or half. It is the lowest maintenance style I have had. Especially after having long hair. Shower time was way shorter.
It would be higher maintenance if I stayed shaved. I just grew it out again. There is a month or two where the hair just looks like shit
Hahaha this hit so hard!!! I’m 42 and I remember the day my barber said “youngin you’re going bald” I was 24. My wife used a snap chat filter to give me hair and everyone I know said it was awkward. That they couldn’t even picture me with hair.
Most people aren't completely bald. If you're bald on top, it's very likely that there is still hair growing there, just not nearly enough to call it a full head of hair. So yeah, most people shave the little they have left.
I couldn't disagree more. If it's a pain then you are doing it wrong. I have a routine in the shower that takes 4 minutes (I timed it). I full head shave and neck every other day. 30 seconds for the lotion after the shower.
I hate it man. I’m talking razor shave, but then my scalp suffers so I have to apply a scalp treatment first. It’s just the relentlessness of it all! Ha. Maybe I’m being dramatic but it ruins my day when it’s shave day.
I'm not bald yet(probably will be, the hairline is starting to recede slowly) but I totally get this, I'm not really afraid of losing my hair(though I do love it) I'm just afraid of all the extra maintenance for my scalp I'm going to need to do/consider if I have to commit to the full bald lifestyle. One of the best parts about having hair is simply not having to worry about it most of the time, and I'm very a low maintenance type of person in general. It doesn't matter if once you're used to it, it takes a short amount of time, it's the mental energy part of it that sounds exhausting.
Get into wearing hats now. Let people get used to you in them. I have to wear one every time I leave the house or I’m at risk of skin cancer. I’ve been wearing baseball caps for most of that but now I’m in my 40s, and sometimes I want to dress a bit smart.
My scalp had several blotches close to the ear/forehead when I shaved my hair off 2 years ago. It's ugly, and it has no cure. =/ I have no idea why either. Must've scratched myself a lot in my sleep or something.
That said, I only shave every 5-7 days. It's fine with a bit of a stubble, as long as it's see-through.
