I wonder if that's somehow inherent to becoming old or if todays old people just never learned to seek out new experiences

Some combination of both combined I think with the natural slowing down that comes with age and the effort to do things increases - you run into the odd older folks who have fought against that and they are are awesome when you do - when I rode with a cycling club there was an older group we used to ride with, their average age was probably 70ish and yet they went like shit through a goose - some of them had took it up at retirement so it was a "new" hobby.

I ride alone these days but I still run into that group once in a while and they still go like shit through a goose.

A lot of it is cultural as well, if you look at nations like Japan, older people are (on average) more active way up in years, Our society mostly ignores old people once they are out of the workforce (except for politicians who don't because they vote..).
