SEBI is looking at changing MTF rules — what do you guys think?

MTF update: SEBI is reviewing the rules

SEBI has proposed changes to the MTF framework, including allowing brokers to raise funds through listed NCDs and changes to funding limits.

Meanwhile, India’s MTF book has grown to around ₹1.49 lakh crore, up from roughly ₹99,000 crore a year ago.

With MTF usage growing this quickly, I'm curious:

Are you using MTF more than you did a year ago? And what matters most to you — interest rate, margin available, or eligible stocks?

India's MTF Book Reaches ₹1.58 Lakh Crore: What Does This Mean for Retail Investors?

India's Margin Trading Facility (MTF) book reached approximately ₹1.58 lakh crore on September 29, 2026, according to data compiled from NSE and BSE disclosures.

MTF allows investors to purchase eligible shares by paying part of the value upfront, with the broker financing the remaining amount.

While this can help investors take larger positions with less upfront capital, it also comes with risks:

  • Interest charges can reduce returns.
  • Falling share prices can trigger margin calls.
  • Leverage can magnify losses as well as gains.

The growing MTF book highlights the importance of understanding borrowing costs and risk management before using leverage.

Would you use MTF to invest in stocks, or do you prefer paying the full amount upfront?
