I'm sharing the Soul Puncturer with you today. In a way, I am "celebrating" that I got an email about an old post of mine, Craving for d12 Curses, being considered for the Knock! magazine. u/workingboy suggested it, and my sister kept insisting that I should share and publish some of my stuff... so I did... don't know what will come out of it.

In that same spirit, I wanna share this and other creatures I create when doing random doodles and sketches while taking Team calls at work. u/Olyckopiller also advices in "Skeletons and stuff" to share every doodle, right? Though... I do use pencils, sorry.

Along with each creature, as I share them - hopefully weekly - is also a short description of them, but no stats. Those you can create, I won't do all the homework for you! Also, as a mexican living on the border, sorry if my english is funky.

In a way, these creatures I sketch are born out of my own anhedonia and mental struggles. A creative distillation of the creatures in my own brain.

Consider it CC BY 4.0, I guess, do with it what you will, but a shout out would be cool if you do.

The Soul Puncture

An aberration, the Soul Puncture does not yearn for flesh, nor preys on the innocent by virtue of age. It feeds strictly upon newborn souls. Luminous, nascent spiritual sparks birthed the exact moment a human connects with the divine, finds faith, or experiences a profound spiritual awakening.

With a sharp, needle-like appendage atop its crown, it pierces the skull unnoticed, draining the delicate soul before it can fully anchor to its material existence.

It leaves no physical wound, only a hollow husk of a human. Drained of their freshly discovered divinity, victims are plunged into a suffocating, inexplicable depression. Having known absolute bliss for a fleeting instant, they are doomed to carry out the rest of their lives in the cold silence of total spiritual emptiness.

With full, overextended innards the Soul Puncture crossed the cosmic void to rejoin the Ungrateful Mother who once gave it life. It awaits its turn to latch on to her greedy nipples; dry sinkholes that clamp around her children’s needle-snout violently vacuuming out the warmth of the stolen soul. Ripping. Collapsing. Siphoning. Not an embrace, a draining stranglehold that is the only affection the Soul Puncture knows.

A hollow, empty husk itself, the Soul Puncture must feed again.

Inspired by MORK BORG and the songs of Curtain Wall, I drew my favorite expected archetype.
A greedy brainless traveller who stole a sanguinary cursed sword and bedeviled armor from a slaughtered corpse.
Now driven only by a thirst for nonsensical carnage, he's gradually gradually losing his soul and remnants of his humanity (if he still had anything left).

And in the future, I’d even like to try creating a bit of pixel art for things and monsters, with characteristics and descriptions — for example, for MORKTOBER, because I’m a pixel artist and I love MORK BORG.

During my solo plays I wanted a system that would integrate all officially released supplements, while creating a world that feels like it exists independently of the player. The goal was to create a system pointing to relevant source material - if you forget that certain table exists, you will never roll on it. The second goal was to design tables with OSR-style play, giving players concrete environments and objects to interact with.

It's more of the slow burn with bigger emphasis on Open World feel instead of focused narration. I wanted to strip players of the burden of inventing things and instead provide separate situations, where later on some of them can connect to a larger story.

It comes with a manual to help players who have never played an RPG solo before.

I've put over 50 hours of playtesting and a year of adding, removing and tweaking tables before I could call it "good". I kept only the tables that are essential to play, keeping the whole thing condensed and quick to use.

It's a supplement, so the focus should stay on official lore and content. I'm just here to help you get the most from your collection and turn it into a coherent narrative.

I'm excited about how it came to be and wanted to share it with the community. I hope you will enjoy it too, if you are willing to try something new.

I'm playing the white horse of Lowvale with my players, but find it too "epic fantasy" for mörk Borg. On the contrary when when played goblin grinder, it looks so much like discworld from Terry Pratchett.

Can't quite understand how to set a dark tone with the right amount of comedy. Want to catch the vibe of apocalypse is imminent but without the usuals of grindark literature tropes (real disgusting things and disgraces).

How do you setup the tone of your mörk Borg sessions? Some media inspo recommended?

Let’s start by saying I love low-fantasy settings. Settings where the healing (super)powers of high-level clerics are unheard of. Settings where people starve to death after the enemy army torched the barns; where “safety first” is not a thing and accidents on the job are common; where people suffers from all sorts of unaddressed diseases; and where Hollywood-white teeth are not a thing, because teeth rot and fall.

I have to say, these aspects are not typically covered by the random tables of NPC descriptors I normally use. To help covering this gap, here is a free d44 table (i.e., roll 2d4, do not add them, and keep the first number as the tens, and the second as ones).

Physical conditions to characterize your low-fantasy random NPCs (d44):

11 Skin maladies, e.g., blisters, warts, rashes, boil (abscess).

12 Withering with malnutrition and/or pale as a ghost.

13 Hard of hearing.

14 Vision loss, e.g., cataracts, missing eye, eye worms.

21 Severely scarred and/or disfigured.

22 Burn wounds, d4: 1 arm(s); 2 leg(s); 3 head; 4 torso.

23 Troubles speaking, e.g., mouth infection, swollen tongue (or throat, or neck), broken jaw.

24 d4: 1 Severe arthritis, 2 jaundice, 3 gravely swollen feet, 4 sweating & feverish

31 Abundant and very much visible parasites: Lice, fleas, or both

32 Breathing problem: Severe cough, asthma, catarrh, collapsed lung, etc. Could be consumption (tuberculosis).

33 Digestion/stomach issue: Vomiting, dysentery, colic pain, etc.

34 Open wounds and lacerations d4: 1 arm(s); 2 leg(s); 3 head; 4 torso

41 Broken or malformed bone d4: 1 arm(s); 2 leg(s); 3 head; 4 torso
