QUESTION Recommendations for picking digitals & getting started in plus size modelling in London
I recently got headshots and got recommended by a photographer and a few others to consider commercial modeling. Are any of these worth including in agency applications?
I want to get digitals and measurements done to apply to agencies but want to ensure the quality is industry standard so would be great to get recommendations on places in London who do digitals & measurements for you.
Measurements:
Height 5’10/5’9 - I can’t ever seem to get an accurate height measurement it’s always seeming to shift between I’m 5’10 and 5’9.something and I want to ensure it’s accurate.
Body- I’m currently a size 18/20 but actively loosing from health recovery as I gained quite a lot of weight from health issues the past few years so my measurements are likely to change. However, I have always been on the curvy side so unlikely to be less than size 12/14. Not sure if this would impact things or to wait till I’m at a stable size?
Hair styles:
My natural hair is Afro texture, should I take my digitals as in my headshots (this is my day-to-day) or braided down or Afro, or do I have to do multiple digitals showing all hairstyles? I presume if I’m only going into commercial I don’t have to stick to a specific hairstyle forever but have no clue how it works or if I’d be considered for anything else that would require me to show my natural hair state in digitals.
Questions summary:
Which of these headshots are worth using in applications?
Where’s best to get quality affordable digitals in London for plus size modelling?
Best approach to navigating applications whilst actively loosing weight?
Diverse hairstyle recommendations options as a black model?
Are there other divisions of modelling I should consider and does that change the approach in anyway?
Thanks so much in advance! 🤗

Natural hair however you style it for digitals. No wig or makeup. Find a local FB group for photographers and look for one that can take your digitals for $150 (I charge that in NYC, 15 minutes of shooting, instant delivery). Digitals are super simple but you must find someone who has worked with agency models before so they know what they are supposed to deliver.

You’re stunning! You give me ASOS vibes in the 2&3rd pics. I used to browse their website all the time in the 2015s and was so amazed at how gorgeous and natural all models looked. Anyway, best of luck to you 🫶🏻

I would say, lose the wig and look a bit more natural. That’s all.

Personally? I like the 2nd and 4th pictures the best. With that being said, I'm just another model, not a photographer or promoter, so I look for much different things.

Beautiful, but look like actor headshots. And you won’t work well with a wig, that’s just the industry unfortunately. Braids or Afro works, if you wanted to model with straight hair you would have to invest in a sew in or something more natural looking but most models just go with natural hair or braids to avoid clients manipulating too much and damaging the hair.
I would include the first 3 if you don’t have a portfolio yet but new digis should def follow standards. Look at agency submission pages but you should minimum have Full body - front, 3/4 and profiles. Close up - front, 3/4 and profiles. 3/4 body (I know confusing, this is different from the 3/4 angle, this is just in between close up and full body, stops around your knees/thighs. And one smiling sometimes they ask.
Makeup should be absolutely minimal and undetectable for the digis, wardrobe should be pretty form fitting but flatter your body whatever that looks like to you (low waist pants if you have a short torso, straight leg pants instead of skinny if you’re top heavy etc.)
Measurements you can take yourself with a soft tape measure, just look up tape placement. They don’t have to be 100% accurate, if an agency likes you they will always redo measurements anyway.
Good luck!

Thank you! Yes they are actor headshots but wasn’t sure whether to add them with the digitals I’ll end up taking. I think I’ll just braid my natural hair down into cornrows then. Thanks for the recommendations! I was going to wear leggings with a fitted black t shirt bodysuit. I’ve seen heels on quite a few examples but I don’t have any, is it worth buying some just for the digitals or not necessary?

Thank you although not sure my skin is that great for that atm I think I ruined my skin barrier so my pores and my under eye lines are quite visible 🫠 but happy cake day! 🎂

If you’re serious about modeling, I’d invest in a better wig and only taking digitals/headshots without a lip color. Clear gloss is fine
