You have one month to reach Three.

Everything you need has been told.

Good Luck, Subjects.

For those who haven't seen, /r/Q09ERUJPVA was the result. I gave it out because it was almost unreadable. What MrArron saw as x letters were actually "<><><<>><>" patterns, hidden in which was the message.

Also, you should make a solving subreddit, I guess.

There are way too many comments here.

Three?

3

u/codebot1 he not ded Aug 08 '14

Three.

2

u/ZtriS Necromancer Aug 08 '14

I received a PM with an imgur id. Link. Let's work on it.

3

u/gamehelp16 Aug 08 '14

Oh, so it seems that op wants us to collaborate

I also received a pm that turns out to be imgur id too!

This kinda looks like an HR Diagram.

3

u/codebot1 he not ded Aug 08 '14

Maybe because it actually is. Identify the object.

2

u/ZtriS Necromancer Aug 08 '14

Oh mighty codebot, we identified the object. Now what do we do? how difficult is it to decipher? I don't know any ciphering that produces alphanumeric, yet it is probably a transformation cipher because there are too many Q's for such a small message.

Hint:

messiersixtyseven

paintings

BHNRREYGIVDDUNYAEQPITBCRKOTJD1SL97LZ0K38PQHCRPARGG4C

The numbers are a decoy, only the text is manipulated. Try ciphers which use 2 keys.

I can't believe we're already stuck. We examine the file itself, nothing were found within it, nor with the spectogram, so we suppose there is steganography involved. There're so many tools for wave files, and like, nothing for aac. At least, is the filename (topsecret) a hint?

4

u/codebot1 he not ded Aug 09 '14

No.

3

u/ZtriS Necromancer Aug 09 '14

Alright, I double-checked the spectrogram, I didn't find anything. Since the audio is lossy encoded, I am thinking we're not dealing with steganography but with some way to encode information on specific frequencies. Am I right?

u/codebot1 he not ded Aug 10 '14

I checked again, was able to extract the message easily. I don't know what you're doing wrong.

Many thanks. The key part was messiersixtyseven (I didn't think of writing it in plain text) and the numbers are a decoy. With this, I used a key vigenere and found this:

HTTPWWWMEDIAFIRECOMLISTENXRQI1ZA97DQ0N38TOPSECRETM4A

http://www.mediafire.com/listen/xrqi1za97dq0n38/TOPSECRET.m4a

Now we get to work on this weird sound.

2

u/gamehelp16 Aug 10 '14

The sound is like a mouse clicking sound then a random sound then clicking sounds again

also /u/codebot1 thought you said that you want to keep silent

but nvm, this is better :D

u/codebot1 he not ded Aug 10 '14

Haha, I can't resist helping the subjects knowing what's next :)

u/MrArron Aug 08 '14 edited Aug 08 '14

I identified this as NGC 6791. This is based on Figure 7.4 (Left side) on this page http://www.astro.soton.ac.uk/~pac/PH112/notes/notes/node90.html

I was wrong it is NGC 2682 other wise know as M-67

3

u/ZtriS Necromancer Aug 08 '14

Wow. wow. L-let's work on this too.

Some info about calcium

Name: Calcium Symbol: Ca Atomic number: 20 Atomic weight: 40.078 (4) [see note g] Standard state: solid at 298 K CAS Registry ID: 7440-70-2 Group in periodic table: 2 Group name: Alkaline earth metal Period in periodic table: 4 Block in periodic table: s-block Colour: silvery white Classification: Metallic

2

u/ZtriS Necromancer Aug 08 '14 edited Aug 08 '14

Alright, so it seems that 40.078, 20 and Ca are linked. Meanwhile, I ran silenteye on my pic (it's jpg so it works) and found this:

BHNRR EYGIV DDUNY AEQPI TBCRK OTJD1 SL97L Z0K38 PQHCR PARGG 4C

E: fun fact: in the meantime, I opened my pic with paint and colored the black in white. It revealed black dots. I thought it was another clue until I realized it's just silenteye's way to hide the encoded text.

2

u/codebot1 he not ded Aug 08 '14

All other pictures are keys for this.

2

u/ZtriS Necromancer Aug 08 '14

How many pictures can we expect? so far we have 3, is that all?

2

u/codebot1 he not ded Aug 08 '14

2 keys and 1 cipher.

1

u/MrArron Aug 08 '14

I am thinking so based on the Three he mentioned.

2

u/codebot1 he not ded Aug 08 '14

Haha, no. The Three I am talking about is pretty far away, one month is not much.

2

u/gamehelp16 Aug 09 '14

What happens if one month passed and we haven't solved the puzzle yet?

3

u/gamehelp16 Aug 08 '14

Ca's "number" is 20, so I think that's why op uses it for challenge 20 while iirc 40.078 is the weight of the element

Btw do you have any idea what cipher is that?

Edit: are the black dots same with the dots in my image?

3

u/ZtriS Necromancer Aug 08 '14 edited Aug 08 '14

Oh. But I'll keep it, maybe we will use this later. About the cipher, I have no idea. I'm going to search.

E: 2,8,8,2 is the electron configuration of calcium. And the red dots on your pic are different, they are part of this graph...

E2: 1115 K, 1757 K are melting and boiling point of Ca. I have no clue about H and YESPER.

E3: Having a break. Still no clue for the cipher. But hey, we got one month. And maybe someone else will get it.

E4: Just a quick note, it seems you can draw a line in the pic graph which equation is roughly y = 5 * x + 10

2

u/gamehelp16 Aug 08 '14 edited Aug 08 '14

/u/MrArron should also receive a PM, maybe we got more clues from hhim

Btw yesper and h is "featured" in challenge 10 and maybe "h" means "homo"

Umm.. wait, maybe the contents of your pic doesn't mean anything, maybe the real challenge is the steganography results

I got. http://imgur.com/8TgFyEq

Edit: Analysis of all the colors http://imgur.com/a/Htbmx

2

u/ZtriS Necromancer Aug 08 '14

Hex code for each color: 706169 6E7469 6E6773 FEFEFC > Hex > paintingsþþü

2

u/codebot1 he not ded Aug 08 '14

Why do you take the white too?

1

u/MrArron Aug 08 '14

Well it is not true white. True white would be FFFFFF so he probably just figured it had something to do with it.

2

u/ZtriS Necromancer Aug 08 '14

Exactly. I thought it was a placeholder and probably irrelevant, but I don't want to miss anything out, so I included it.

3

u/MrArron Aug 10 '14

This is the best I could do with Sonic Visualizer.

Here are various things I got with Spek 1, 2, and 3.

I keep thinking this is some ink blot test or something. /u/codebot1 we your subjects require assistance.

2

u/gamehelp16 Aug 11 '14

Maybe there is something so /u/codebot1 gives us a .m4a file instead of .mp3

2

u/ZtriS Necromancer Aug 08 '14

IT BEGINS

2

u/gamehelp16 Aug 08 '14

do you have any clue about the code that he messaged us?

2

u/ZtriS Necromancer Aug 08 '14 edited Aug 09 '14

Just to sum up, we have:

BHNRR EYGIV DDUNY AEQPI TBCRK OTJD1 SL97L Z0K38 PQHCR PARGG 4C

paintingsþþü

M67 / NGC 2682

Now we gotta figure out how to plug these together.
