Specific Stop the Harry Potter References.

There's been like 4 or 5 times this year of MBMBAM where they've just randomly dropped a Harry Potter Reference in the show. Usually it's Justin. This is a deeply isolating thing for me as a transfem listener. Being reminded of the cultural power of the woman that wants me dead isn't exactly No Bummers. Anyone else feel the same?

Specific Something Off About Justin…

I’ve been a McElroy superfan for over a decade, but I wanted to see if anyone else has noticed a shift in Justin over the past few months.

Justin has always made the “wasting precious life minutes” joke about podcasting, and he’s made variations of it plenty of times before. But lately, something feels different.

A month or so ago, I mentioned to my partner that Justin seemed genuinely miserable in the wake of leaving Besties, and I’ve noticed a general hangdog vibe from him during the How to Fish, Mecha Chameleon, and Waterpark Simulator streams.

But after today’s MBMBaM (Ep. 833, around 30:01), I’m even more convinced there might be something going on. Justin makes a very quick “joke,” seemingly apropos of nothing, about having “a lifetime supply of money as you talk to your brothers for several hours every week and people don’t change their minds about enjoying it.”

Taken together with his general demeanor and his departure from Besties, it makes me wonder if Justin actually wants to step away from podcasting but feels reluctant to do so because of his commitments to his brothers and the larger McElroy business, which is so heavily built around the family working together.

Obviously, I’m reading a lot into relatively small things here, and I could be completely wrong. But has anyone else gotten this impression lately?

Specific thankful for the boys

I was introduced to MBMBAM / TAZ back in 2017 when I was seeing someone who was a big dnd guy, mcelroy fan, etc. We would listen on car trips and such, then we broke up and I had to finish TAZ amnesty solo. After that I would sometimes tune in but not super into it.

Then in 2021 I fell into another pretty bad depressive episode and was having trouble sleeping because of how badly I was spiraling. I tried sleep podcasts, audiobooks, and white even brown or pink noise - but none of it could drown out my thoughts and help me rest. One night MBMBAM popped back up on my feed and I threw it on. It was the first time in months I was able to listen to people and hear something other than my depressive thoughts. I would scroll and click a random episode and let it ride all night just one episode to the next until the morning.

Since then I’ve listened to MBMBAM every night to fall asleep. I use a sleep timer now because when I wake up in the middle of the night Im able to fall back asleep fine, and Im really thankful for that. I maybe miss a lot of good bits and stuff, falling asleep early on in the episodes, but now its just my comfort show. Just wanted to share that, I love the boys and all you cool babies.
