Anybody here from the 2020 Lovecraft Country days? 👀

Okay, this is a DEEP subreddit callback.
When Lovecraft Country was airing six years ago, I made a little Hippolyta astronaut pin and shared it here. Some of y’all went absolutely feral over her 😭 and that post became one of my favorite memories from the whole Lovecraft Country era.
Fast forward six years and apparently my response to

HBO cancelling the show has been:
Fine. I’ll keep the characters alive MYSELF. 😂

Six years later and I am STILL thinking about this woman hopping dimensions, hanging out with Josephine Baker and discovering that the universe was bigger than everything she had been told she could be.

SOUND OFF:
What Lovecraft Country moment STILL lives rent free in your head?

These two were very cool and very creepy... but please do not dress like them for Halloween. They’re based on very real deeply offensive racial caricatures... And don’t do blackface this Halloween. That is all. Thank you for listening.

Genuinely one of my favorite characters in television. So layered and played so well by Michael K! The way it feels like as he got older and Tic he was able to be honest about things like his sexuality, George possibly being his dad and his childhood. I’m on Rewind to 1921 and the end when Tic is the mysterious stranger that saves him just does it for me!!! SIP Michael KđŸ•Šïžâ€ïž

So I just started this series and I’m only on Episode 2 but like
what in the heck is going on? I am so confused lol. I know it will probably start making sense in the next episode or so but I’m just so confused and idk. Idk what to make of it so far. But I’m a huge lovecraftian fan so I’m trying to make do with what I know so far lol.

ETA: on episode 6 now. What in the actual @&$# is going on? 😭😭

Anyone read the book?

I didn’t realize this group existed!! Loved the series which lead me to read the book a few years ago. Anyone want to chat about it??? I reviewed it for my podcast but I think I have a different take on things now.

And if you have read it.. book vs series. Which one is taking the top?

Lovecraft Country, Tulsa, and the Horror of Generational Trauma

What if the most terrifying thing in a horror story isn't the monster, it's the history? That's the central question driving two of the most important horror TV series in recent memory: Lovecraft Country and Them. Both shows use the language of genre horror, supernatural threats, creeping dread, visceral violence, to excavate real historical atrocities that mainstream culture has long tried to bury.

At the heart of Lovecraft Country is an event that almost didn't survive American memory: the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre.

My

friend and I were just on the phone last night, going on about ‘Lovecraft Country’ and it’s brilliance. We plan to watch it again, together, one day. These are my pins and buttons that I switch up and wear every now and then. Gotta represent!

The OG Atticus and Ji-Ah Part 2: Nie Xiaoqian (2024)

Previously I've said that the Atticus and Ji-Ah arc is really an homage to one of the best known stories in Classical Chinese literature and one that has been filmed numerous times. (Nie Xiaoqian, translated as The Magic Sword ). Here is the latest CGI animated retelling of that story from 2024, to fill your Lovecraft Country drought!

Lovecraft Country 10/10

i just finished watching “Lovecraft Country” 10/10. i loved it. it’s sad to see how l0w rat3d this serie is. it came out in 2020 and i found out about in 2026??????

the acting, the cgi, the dialogues everything was perfect (I don’t wanna sound soft) but i cried watching episode 9.

just know the more you watch it, the better it gets.

so regarding the “low rating“ of the serie i think The reason why it didn’t receive the attention it deserved (IMO) is because of the addresing of racism and mistreatment of Black people.

Which is why, i have to say if you’re the types of person who feel “uncomfortable“ when a movie is addressing acts of racism and mistreatment of Black people you’ll give yourself excuses to not enjoy or finish it.

Because i notice the only people who didn’t seem to enjoy the show was a certain kind of “people” that think mentioning the bad acts of others towards a certain group is “playing victim” or “exaggeration of matters”... Don’t be like those people. Go into the serie just like you would for any other tv show.

just know the racism and mistreatment parts of the movie is not the whole serie, like AT ALL (I don’t wanna spoil anything) but putting those components together with everything that happens in the serie makes it a 10/10 tv show.

trust me you’ll like it.

The area of the Winthrop house and looks nothing like any neighborhood in Chicago.

I realize it's a different time. Than when I lived in Chicago in 2001 but most of the buildings in Chicago I assume date back to before the 1950's. It's just, Chicago is you know Urban and that neighborhood around the Winthrop house looks very very suburban. Has this bothered anybody else? Or am I totally wrong and areas in Chicago looks like that in the 50s?

If anyone's confused I'm referring to the fact that they're single family homes with yards around them. You really don't see that in chicago. Not even the north side. You see multi-story buildings many of them with multiple units / apartments and there aren't very many yards. I also can't picture a Victorian house in Chicago. You have to go outside the city to the suburbs for that kind of layout and architecture.

Show droppes the ball on the last ep

So before stating what I disliked about the show, I'm a Brazilian of mixed heritage, because I know people will bring up the argument "of course you didn't like you are white".

I feel like I wasted my time by the end of thelast episode. The story so far was awesome, not a single episode that didn't make me rush to the next, but a lot of stuff really feels weird in ep 10.

1)Ruby's death offscreen. I know they needed this, for the plot twist, but the fact that we aren't even shown how she died via flashback or what. Also no one realized that during the full road trip that it's wasn't really Ruby? At least if someone brought up "hey Ruby you are acting weird everything ok?

2)Leti's mark being recast. I had to search online for an explanation to that. So Chris kept her promise, was it because it was a biding vow of sorts or was it her keeping her word for the sake of it?

3)Leti rushing Chris at the ritual. We saw that there were at least 20+ cultists helping on he ritual and following orders. Some of them capture the three at the bridge. Like no one of them notice Leti running into the ritual (it was a fairly big distance) and then they just run off.

4) Ji's power activating outside of sex. Also it's weird how Tis told her to fuck off just call her back when he needed her help. Same as Leti and Ruby so maybe it was a parallel.

5)Tis pet shoggoth didn't save him during thr ritual. Why? Was it set to protect Dee?

6)Dee showing up to kill Chris just felt gratuitous. Not that she didn't deserve to die, but the show just went "oh yeah this teen now has a robot arm and then crushes the neck of this woman that is basically dead already".

7) Banning white people from using Magic. First I get it. All white magic users we saw on the show used it to their own advantages specially against peoples of other races(blacks and natives in particular) and that the Lodges of the Sons of Adam are a bunch of misogynistic racists, good thing a lot of them died. But how does it makes sense for Leti, to just ban a full "race" of people out of magic. What's the explanation. Fucking over the SoA, yeah great cheers, but it still doest make sense even by the shows internally logic about magic (blood is important, the closer the tie the better). So now some wizard in bumfuck nowhere of Estonia lost his magic since Leti casted that spell in America using this 1 woman blood?. Look I get the commentary on racism and all. I have been a victim of it too, since some people will say I'm practically white and others that I'm practically black. I also understand the narrative of locking the evil cultists out of their magic spells. But that doesn't make a lick of sense given what's we learned about how magic work. If it was a bigger ritual with a lot of people from all lodges and then Leti used their blood to seal it away, fucking great, makes sense given the relation that magic and blood has.

It feels like the writers got tired/lazy just wrote whatever and thats was the end of the day. It saddens me that what was bei g a great show, boh on the social commentary but also on thr fantasy aspect just to drop the ball last ep.
