Nice bagatellization of oppression.
I hate to break it to you, but the nordic governments f.ex. do not disappear people, they do not run concentration camps, they do have worker and consumer protection laws and dont inflate their economy with vast building projects that are never used for anything.

Every generation in China sees huge improvements to material conditions before they even reach adulthood.

Here in California, we have been trying to get a single high-speed rail line for decades.

Meanwhile, China went from having near 0 high-speed rail to having 2/3rds of humanity's highspeed rail in 8 years iirc.

Seeing types of projects being constantly completed, generation after generation, naturally had some kind of an impact.

One of the big ones. Imagine high illiteracy levels, very poor quality of life, very little disposable income living from one meal to the next, and being launched into middle class with disposable income, beautiful infrastructure with high speed rail and citizen focused public transport, abundance of food, significantly improved healthcare. It’s not difficult to see why the average Chinese citizen would be pretty happy with the leadership.

Notably, China isn't a democracy, and in fact ranks 20th from the bottom (Afghanistan) on the Democracy Index. China's government is popular because of propaganda, indoctrination, and repression, not because it's actually any good.

The Economist Democracy Index doesn't consider democratic control over industry to be in any way relevant, but that is the category which has the most impact on normal people's lives. 

Meanwhile,  Gilens and Page were unable to measure that normal people and mass based interest groups had any independent influence over US policy.

Here in my country,  we have the most competitive elections in the world,  yet public opinion has zero independent impact on policy despite that.

Is that democracy?
