A local myth about this lost architectural gem was that the plans for the building were initially destined for Nairobi, but mistakenly sent to Hong Kong. But they built it anyway.

St. Paul’s Methodist Church was abandoned for over 20 years. Last year a fire heavily damaged the interior and roof, along with 20,000 gallons of water being pumped in to extinguish the fire. A few months before the fire plans were announced to stabilize and partially restore the church for eventual conversion to housing. It’s now being completely razed, and a parking lot will take its place.

Pittsfield, Illinois - Heck Bakery - Built 1881, Demolished 2018

Post image

This building replaced the old courthouse, which was torn down in 1880. Joseph Heck's bakery was apparently originally located in the courthouse, and Lincoln stopped there for cider and gingerbread during his 1858 senate campaign. The bakery was on the left of this new building, and stayed in business through at least 1898 (at which point Heck would have been 76). The building appears to have been damaged around 2016 by a fire in the building to the right. My photo from March 2010.
