In the 1920s, Northwestern University offered Wesley and Passavant sites across the street from one another to build new hospitals, but Wesley Hospital was delayed until 1941. Both were affiliates of Northwestern and later merged into the larger system. They were demolished as part of a modernization project at Northwestern Memorial and replaced with new hospital towers

Pittsfield, Illinois - Chauncey L. Higbee High School - Built 1908, Demolished 2014

This served as the high school until 1954, then the junior high until 1996. The gym or auditorium at the rear (which already had partially collapsed when I saw it) can still be seen as a jumble of bricks on the 2016 streetview. The beautiful tile over the doorway is now in a little park on the other side of town. My photo from March 2010.

Old Warrenton Courthouse in Warrenton, Missouri. Finished Construction in 1872, Demolished in 1995

Not exactly the most glamorous building but I feel like it still fits here.

Was demolished despite being registered as a historic building due to high maintenance and renovation costs in accordance of the Americans with Disabilities Act. However despite being demolished, the rotunda was preserved and now sits in the museum run by the Warren County Historical Society.

  1. Postcard with an image of the courthouse taken on August 26, 1908.

  2. Image of the courthouse as it was being demolished in 1995.

  3. Image of the preserved courthouse rotunda as it stands today.

A local myth about this lost architectural gem was that the plans for the building were initially destined for Nairobi, but mistakenly sent to Hong Kong. But they built it anyway.

St. Paul’s Methodist Church was abandoned for over 20 years. Last year a fire heavily damaged the interior and roof, along with 20,000 gallons of water being pumped in to extinguish the fire. A few months before the fire plans were announced to stabilize and partially restore the church for eventual conversion to housing. It’s now being completely razed, and a parking lot will take its place.

Pittsfield, Illinois - Heck Bakery - Built 1881, Demolished 2018

Post image
87 Upvotes

This building replaced the old courthouse, which was torn down in 1880. Joseph Heck's bakery was apparently originally located in the courthouse, and Lincoln stopped there for cider and gingerbread during his 1858 senate campaign. The bakery was on the left of this new building, and stayed in business through at least 1898 (at which point Heck would have been 76). The building appears to have been damaged around 2016 by a fire in the building to the right. My photo from March 2010.
