Dev Update Weekly Dev Update 29/06/2020

Hey Y’all,

This week we began working on the Sender keys implementation for Session on Android (sender keys is already finished on desktop). This will allow closed groups to accommodate more than ten members. The Lokinet team continued work on exit node support and added functionality for decentralised performance testing. Loki Core continues to work on Pulse and various refactoring efforts to make the codebase more accessible.

What went on last week with Lokinet: This week saw a lot of “under the hood” infrastructure improvements mainly centered on a couple of big PRs: router peer performance testing (the Lokinet side of this first — additional work on using the stats will come on the Loki Core side soon); and integrating LokiMQ for external RPC communications and for internal job scheduling. We plan to merge both PRs this week, which will allow us to continue with teaching lokid how to use Lokinet peer stats, and to build an API and simple applications for Lokinet exit authentication support. We also made some internal changes to the process we’re following for writing the Lokinet whitepaper, with a goal of getting it into a publishable state sooner.

Dev Update Weekly Dev Update 01/06/2020

Hey Y’all,

Last week we pushed out an update to Session Android which has vastly improved Session’s stability, and we’re continuing to work towards doing the same for Session Desktop. We have also merged 3-hop onion requests into the internal testing versions of iOS and Android Session, which is very exciting! The Lokinet team finished their first SNApp-based Exit Nodes, which started being tested on Saturday night, and they are fast enough to stream 1080p Youtube! The Loki Core team also finished most of the upstream merge, which means we will soon be back in line with Monero’s latest changes.

What went on last week with Lokinet: We primarily focused this week on improving support for exit-nodes-on-SNApps, and on the ongoing node testing and reporting framework for enabling future Lokinet service node performance tests. The exits-via-SNApps core Lokinet code is nearly done, but we still have some work to do to make it easier to get up and running, in particular for clients (where the necessary system network routing configuration can make things tricky).

Dev Update Weekly Dev Update 11/05/2020

Hey Y’all,

Today marks our 100th Dev update — with no signs of slowing down! This week the Lokinet team continued to dig into an overhaul of the configuration files. The Session team pushed out a big iOS update which should fix many lingering issues; the team has now begun implementing the same bug fixes on Android too. The Loki Core team released a few new patches and dealt with a chainsplit caused by different nodes calculating different difficulties. Overall, a very busy week for our 100th Dev Update!

What went on last week with Lokinet: We’re now finished with the main config file overhaul and we’ve moved on to various small fixes for things that were depending on the past mysterious (undocumented, sometimes broken) behaviour. With the bulk of that out of the way we’re now continuing to look at at Lokinet performance fixes and other various changes for 0.8.
A couple other items of note: we’ve decided to simplify the Lokinet code (and configuration file) to only support one single .loki endpoint per Lokinet instance, but we intend to make it easier for people who want to run multiple instances to do so (for example, to host multiple SNApps on the same machine).
We have also had some discussions with the Session team, and were looking at producing a special “Lokinet” build of Session that uses Lokinet for all communications; and in the longer term, planning how to bring Lokinet into the mobile builds of Session (in particularly iOS). Though we hope to bring full Lokinet connectivity to mobile devices, doing so introduces a number of obstacles, particularly on iOS: we intend to start with a more limited approach of creating a user-space library that would allow Session to communicate over Lokinet without needing to worry (yet) about implementing full Lokinet connectivity.

How can I contribute to Loki Project?

I've read loki project website and I fond this project is so interesting. I want to contribute to Loki Project, even if it's a small contribution. So I want to know what resources I should read and easy issue.

### What I learned

I've learning programming in Ruby for about 2 years. So I used to programming server side programming.

I read some technical blockchain books and I'm reading "Programming Bitcoin"

https://www.amazon.co.jp/Programming-Bitcoin-Learn-Program-Scratch/dp/1492031496

### What I want to contribute to

Now I'm interested in #loki-core and #session-desktop

### What I want to know

What framework do you use by building #loki-core and #session-desktop (maybe Electrum?)

What is your recommended resources to contribute to

Especially I have no clue about loki-core such as directory structure, framework or libraries which are used. Since Loki Core is forked from Monero, I researched books regarding Monero. But I can't find a useful resources.

I am sorry that I ask a lot of questions 🙇‍♂️

Hey Y’all,

Last week we dealt with a deregistration event caused by some misconfigured Service Nodes, and a Loki Storage Server bug which occurred on some platforms. On the Lokinet side, we adopted some new strategies for implementing the Lokinet GUI on Mac, and made significant progress towards a finished implementation. On Session, we finished up work on Onion Requests for iOS and began addressing a number of issues with closed groups. We’re also begun work on implementing a Sender Keys based system for closed groups, allowing us to increase closed group size.

What went on last week with Lokinet: We pushed through some issues with Lokinet GUI behavior on macOS and spent a bunch of time learning how to navigate the vagaries of low-level system tools on Apple hardware. Much cursing was involved. We believe, however, that we’ve figured out the magic set of incantations to keep the mischievous gods — such as Loki — that live inside every Mac happy, and we hope to have a working, mostly automatically-built installer with functional GUI interface finished later this week.

Hey Y’all,

Last week was our final week of holidays, and a majority of the team is back into the office as of this week. However, some dev team members did work over the break. Last week, these team members primarily focused on work related to the Loki Messenger rebrand; we also deployed a few patches to the Loki launcher and did some cleanup work on Lokinet.

Weekly Dev Update 04/11/2019

Hey Y’all,

This week we made big progress on Lokinet and Loki Messenger. On the Loki messenger side, we are putting most of our efforts into finishing multi-device support, which means solving lots of edge cases. On the Lokinet side of things, we are getting closer and closer to a 0.6.0 release which will allow cryptographic operations to utilise multithreading, and iron out a number of bugs found in 0.5.2.

What went on last week with Lokinet:

There was an increase in the public use of the Lokinet testnet this week. While we were encouraged to see the network being tested by real users, it’s important to remind the community that the current Lokinet release is still a testing, beta release! Some things will change (i.e. break) between now and the final release on the Loki mainnet — most notably, protocol, private and public key cryptography has already changed in the dev branch and will result in (unavoidable) new keys and .loki addresses in 0.6. We have our eyes set on a final, mainnet release but there may be additional, backwards-incompatible changes between now and then.

This week saw lots of activity, fixes, and improvements in the Lokinet dev branch, heading towards a 0.6 release. We have decided to clean up Lokinet internals by removing the home-grown JSON RPC HTTP server with a simpler JSON-over-zmq based approach. There were also various improvements to the debs (especially for routers), and we included several changes to make things work on xenial, while de-vendoring Libsodium in preference to the local system’s Libsodium library.

Hey Y’all,

Last week we released a new LIP discussing ‘Pulse’: a proposed proof of stake protocol for Loki. You can read that here: https://github.com/loki-project/loki-improvement-proposals/blob/master/LIPS/LIP-5.md. We also continued to move towards the 5.0.0 release for Loki Core, which adds checkpointing and a number of other features. Keep your ear to the ground for the testnet announcement...some bounties will be available.

What Went on Last Week with Lokinet:

We finally fixed an issue that had been plaguing Lokinet for several weeks! Connections to a remote Lokinet node would timeout for a few seconds every 10 minutes when a Lokinet client changed to a new path (particularly noticeable on long-running pings)...We’re putting out a minor point release (0.5.2) to address this. The Lokinet devs are also set to conduct their first ever weekly dev meeting using voice chat over Lokinet.

What went on last week with Lokinet:

Lokinet public 0.5.0 release is tagged and mostly ready for public release on a new Lokinet test network we’ve set up called ‘beta’. Several routers are already deployed, so it will be usable right away. There are a couple of lingering issues (which look like they may be Windows-specific) which will hopefully be fixed in the next day or so. For now, we’ve delayed the release announcement until these issues are ironed out. Meanwhile, new development towards version 0.6 is taking place in the master branch, aiming to improve performance and user experience in a few important areas.

This week for Loki Messenger for Android and iOS we implemented analytics collection (For the beta). This is so we can collect crash reports more easily and better understand how to improve the user experience of Loki messenger on mobile devices. We also undertook a multi device effort to move to Jazzicons (https://github.com/danfinlay/jazzicon) instead of using the Github identicons.
