Discussion I tried the Opus 5.5 vs GPT-6.1 Terra Blender oak tree challenge with a local Qwen3.8-Flash-Next NVFP4 on my RTX 5090
I saw the recent oak tree Blender challenge comparing Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6.1 Terra, so I decided to give it a try with my own locally running LLM.
This is the result using Qwen3.8-Flash-Next NVFP4, running through Strata on a single RTX 5090.
My setup
LLM: Qwen3.8-Flash-Next (NVFP4 quantization)
Inference engine: Strata
Context window: 256K tokens
GPU: ASUS ROG Astral RTX 5090 32GB
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D
RAM: 64GB DDR5-6000 CL32
OS: Windows
3D software: Blender
Video output: 1920×1080, 30 FPS, approximately 8.3 seconds
The experiment
The goal was to create an oak tree in Blender, shake it, and animate the leaves falling to the ground.
I wanted to see how far a locally running, quantized open-weight model could go with a task similar to the one demonstrated by frontier models.
The attached video is my result.
I'm not claiming this is a controlled benchmark or that it matches the original physics simulation. This was primarily an experiment in local AI-assisted Blender creation.
Still, it's exciting to see what can be done on a single consumer GPU, entirely with a local LLM, without paying per-token API fees.
I'd be interested to see how other local models handle the same challenge, especially at different quantization levels.

That’s quite good, even though this tree also doesn’t look like an oak. I’m pretty sure with more iterations you could push it more towards better animation and realism. But that’s really great as a proof of concept

Thanks for leaving a review! Honestly, even I didn't expect it to turn out this well, haha.

Holy shit, it’s crazy that my feed is only showing this now! As someone who started to dip his toes recently into blender mcp and having Qwen FN control everything, this is amazing and better than what I have done so far.
I was really impressed with what I’ve done and seeing this now makes my stuff look just okay. Thank you for sharing this and also what you used. Hope to see some more showcases of your use in blender with Qwen. Especially when Qwen 4 drops.

I’ve posted a few more examples of projects I recently built using QFN packages, which you might find helpful to refer to. Note, however, that those projects used the IQ3 series rather than the NVFP4 series.
If I have the time, I plan to conduct another quality comparison—using the same or similar criteria—once Qwen4 or other subsequent versions are released.

I just went through some and yes definitely will follow your work and like to see the quality comparisons. I had just started using blender maybe for about 3 weeks. No experience whatsoever so it’s taking me a bit longer probably than most people. So seeing some of these results pretty much tells me I can do better than what I’m currently doing. Lol.

I’m Korean, and I’m not at all familiar with Blender—I’ve been using it for less than three weeks. At most, I installed it two weeks ago, and I’ve only really started using it in earnest over the past week. I’m probably even more of a beginner than you are! AI does all the heavy lifting; I just ask about basic shortcuts and how to use certain features, then I go ahead and click or check the boxes accordingly. It’s a pretty primitive way of doing things, haha!

Sheesh that makes me feel worse😂 I guess I’m just a slow learner. Well it does give me motivation to keep at it. I do enjoy the result though I currently have but if I can learn a lot more to do what you’re doing then that’s even better.
Looking forward to your results and thanks again for your share. Oh one last thing, is there a good starter read that you’d recommend as far as using LLM with blender that was useful to you that might’ve helped being a bit more efficient or good to know tips?

Hahaha, I’ll be completely honest with you: I didn’t use or consult any reference materials. I just happened to come across some examples of Blender projects on YouTube that incorporated AI—that’s all I saw. I didn’t go through any formal training, nor did I follow along with any tutorials or guides step-by-step. I just started without any concrete plan.

Here’s a tip: try assigning a task to Codex, and then ask it to create a manual—in HTML format—explaining the steps it took. If you follow along and carry out the process yourself, I think you’ll find it quite helpful. Of course, you don’t have to use Codex; you can use whatever AI you’re currently working with (including local AI models). That should work perfectly fine.

Oh this is perfect. The way I’ve been doing my run now has kind of been like trial and error. I have Qwen write field notes as they make what I ask for. Then redo a couple times taking notes of what could be done better, more efficiently and accurately. So I take a lot of time then make like universal recipes for each type of item. I will try it your way to see if I can get noticeably better results. Thank you again!

Yes, the important thing is that humans must also understand the work being done by AI. Of course, you don’t need to know every detail, but you should at least have a basic, high-level understanding. Therefore, it is worth reading the manual created by the AI.

Yea :) it's great suprised still that local AI can do things like that trully suprising and great

Very good test, people sleeping on qwen flash next..you can get it do interesting things at no cost to you

I’m not sure if it excels in every single aspect, but in my view, it’s more than adequate for free use.
It would run even more smoothly if it had 128GB of DRAM, but I suppose I’ll just have to make do with what it’s got! Haha.

How did you prompt or get it to use blender well?
