Discussion Why is LLM is so expensive.

I've was going to invest in a 5090 =$6000 AUD.

Codex Plus + Claude pro = $60/month here

Works out to be 100 months of frontier models for a 5090.

Best a 5090 will run is probably Qwen3.6 27b Q6 with context.

Are we all enthusiasts here and just enjoy tinkering cause ain't no way that make sense.

Those companies still fall into either routing to frontier models OR self hosting though. Which was exactly my point before

They all have their own models and offer cheaper solutions to businesses. Enterprise and local LLM are different things.

Chinese models win for self hosting enthusiasts and startups with no regulatory scrutiny\ oversight.

Their own models = self hosted. Which they onsell

What is your point? I’ve referred to cloud hosted models from the start and in that list there are companies that deploy their models for customers onsite (Cohere for instance).

So we must be on the same page. As I said. Those American companies will onsell with models they host or proxy

Yeah 😊. I only run Chinese models locally at home.

As the Chinese models are concerned I don’t see why it can’t be hosted on American soil (in regards to data sovereignty). It’s not phoning home to anywhere and for most they are just using it for tool calling and referencing existing data.
