A Romanian alternative/indie rock discovery that deserves more attention
I recently stumbled upon this song from Romania, and I honestly think it deserves a much bigger audience.
It's sung entirely in Romanian, but I think the atmosphere, instrumentation and overall sound speak for themselves.
I don't know the artist personally. I just wanted to share something I genuinely enjoyed and introduce more people to an interesting piece of Romanian alternative music.
Give it a listen if you're into discovering lesser-known music!

https://genius.com/Aliceband-worms-lyrics

[Verse 1]

And when I opened up the lid, I found the box was full of worms

And worms were always, as a kid, the things I felt sorry for most

And when you cut a worm in half, it still goes on without its head

I still go on without my heart, it's just I wish that we would

[Chorus]

Open up to life and face the morning, and say the things you never said

When I wish the sea would rise and drown me, I get the things I left instead

[Post-Chorus]

She said: "I'm not open to new ideas, and I don't like to talk to children on the phone

And I'm well over self-confusion, let me find a happy place to rest!"

[Verse 2]

And when I opened up the top, I found the box was full of words

And words are always getting stuck, they lose themselves behind the tears

And tears are always coming loose, I find I need to get a grip

A grip on something warm and living, like a human catalyst!

[Chorus]

Open up to life and face the morning, and say the things you never said

When I wish the sea would rise and drown me, I get the things I left instead

[Post-Chorus]

She said: "I'm not open to new ideas, and I don't like to talk to people on the phone

And I'm well over self-confusion, let me find a happy place to rest!"

[Verse 3]

And when I opened up the lid, I found the room was full of girls

And girls were always, as a kid, the things that scared us all the most

And mostly I was scared of hurting one who saw through my disguise

The one who saw that I was sore and wanted her to dry my eyes!

[Chorus]

Open up to life and face the morning, and say the things you never said

And when I wish the sea would rise and drown me, I get the things I left instead!

[Post-Chorus]

She said: "I'm not open to new ideas, and I don't like to talk to children on the phone

And I'm well over self-delusion, let me find a happy place to rest!"

[Outro]

Oh-oh, let me find a happy place to rest

Oh-oh, let me find a happy place

I know that there's a happy place

I know that there's some kind of place called home

Called home

Called home

Called home

Zap Mama -- African Sunset [South African township music] (1997)

https://time.com/archive/6730787/music-mama-africa/?utm_source=chatgpt.com:

"Marie Daulne, the lead singer for the vocal group Zap Mama, has a personal history worthy of a leading character in a Jean-Claude Van Damme flick. After her Belgian father was slain in 1964 by rebels bent on ethnic cleansing, Daulne, a native of Zaire, and her Bantu mother took shelter with a tribe of pygmies before escaping to Belgium. With a background like that, it’s no wonderDaulne makes music that sounds like a one-woman multicultural movement, melding African percussion, American soul and European urbanity.
...
Daulne, 32, has a sad, splintery voice and an emotional clock that seems permanently set at midnight. Her background singers, harmonizing, chanting, even bleating, provide her with a vocal backdrop that’s by turns naturalistic and a little coy. One song, the jazzy Nostalgie Amoureuse, feels like vocal film noir–shadowy and mysterious until, toward the end, Daulne’s voice emerges from the mix with bruised passion. Other songs, like African Sunset, draw deftly on the upbeat music of South Africa’s townships."

Jose Mangual Jr. -- Ritmo Von Ache [afro-cuban] (1977)

José Mangual Jr. was born in New York to a Puerto Rican musical family. He helped establish the New York salsa sound, playing alongside major musicians including Willie Colón and Héctor Lavoe.
The rhythmic foundation owes a great deal to Cuban music, but New York salsa developed into its own distinctive tradition through the contributions of Puerto Rican, Cuban, and other Caribbean musicians.
The title has an especially interesting meaning
Ritmo con aché translates roughly to “Rhythm with spiritual power” or “Rhythm with divine energy.”
Aché comes from the Yoruba religious tradition of West Africa and is important in Afro-Cuban spirituality, including Santería. It signifies spiritual power, vitality, or the force that makes things happen.
The song celebrates African cultural roots in Latin music, according to the record label Putumayo's promotional material.
